I was building a small 15 pt mangled metal list and was wondering, for eMagnus, is a Renegade, or a Nomad a better use of 6 points?

The Renegade is so very good. I have never run into a situation where I had a good enough reason to not take one when I'm playing Magnus, and it is usually the first model that goes into the list.

I'm kinda tempted to play his Bad Seeds theme list at 15 points.
This would get you Kell Bailoch for free....and at 15pts Orin Midwinter would shut down a bunch of casters.
Magnus the Warlord (*6pts)
* Renegade (6pts)
* Renegade (6pts)
Rangers (5pts)
Kell Bailoch (0pts)
Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor (2pts)

In that list, you are paying 5 points to make sure/hope two one shot weapons hit in a game. That is a lot of points.
If you come up against someone with the nearly anything decent at 15 points you're in trouble.

Yeah, I don't like more than a single Renegade under 30-ish points- one-shots are just too unreliable.
It'd depend on the list, though- renegades are devastating assist pieces, but if you don't have the armor or damage output, a nomad is probably better.
Re: strong 15 points, probably the most abusive merc list you can fit in 15 points is a galleon, buccaneer, and jack-centric caster.

Renegades are enablers for the rest of your army. Make sure you have a "rest of your army" before you take one.
I'd go with a single Renegade at most and make sure I had a Mule or a Nomad to take advantage of the knockdown.

On the subject of the Renegade, I always found the quote on the card humorous. Obviously those trenchers don't know its a one shot weapon.

...or how to dig in.
I appreciated 1st edition flavor text a lot more, though. They used to poke fun at their game rather than the almost unbroken "this guy's cool, buy it!" hard sell in 2nd ed.
