Quick sanity check - at the beginning of each new battle round (game turn) players roll off and the winner picks who goes first that round... meaning its very probably that a player will get 2 consecutive turns. Is that the way everyone else is reading that, too?

Correct. In fact several armies have ways to influence (or flat out control) the roll, to help make sure they get two consecutive turns.

It's more useful for shooty and/or fast armies, obviously, as in a melee both sides are getting to fight each turn.

In the most extreme case, you could get three turns back-to-back; a Lizardmen army could theoretically go last one round, go first the next, and then get a 'free turn' from the engine of the gods overloading!

Correct.

Except for the first turn. Whoever stopped deploying first always goes first.

Mos Eisley Spaceport... I shot first.

It's similar to LOTR which most everyone hated way back when. Glad I still play it. Sorry for all the WFB players though. I never moved on from 6th so I have been able to enjoy both massed battles and skirmish since 2002.

Sucks when a game gets junked.

It's actually one of the parts of the new game i like the best. The tides of war shift back and forth. You can't plan nearly as much as you used to. But it does let you take a gamble. Won one game by moving as far as i could towards his vulnerable units and general, won the roll, got to go again and pull off a sneak attack on him.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

We over came the issue of one person Winning every time. BattleTech uses the thing, Roll Off Each New Turn.
The next 'Turn' the looser from the last 'Turn' got a +2 to the roll his Roll and if he still lost the second Roll, he got it Automatically on the Third Turn.
