I don't see why AOS can't be played rank and file with large amounts of models.
my gaming group has done several games using the rank and file method.
the only modification we made was front arc line of sight.
this made flanking a possibility, and made infantry battles fun.
We kept the pile in moves. So as turns go, the lines break up, and the back ranks step up, and it turns into a mosh pit.
flanking one of those mosh pits is really rewarding, when you are throwing 15 attacks, and they can only throw 5 or 6 back at you.

Try it.
that's all I'm saying.
