Am I the only person who loathes the dice roll to see who gets to go first in the next round? I think it's probably the least palatable rule of the entire four pages, and that includes the lack of balanced armies, Sudden Death, shooting into combat, and so on. I've thus far convinced all my opponents to let the game continue in the tried and true 'I Go, You Go' fashion. To do otherwise seems to obliterate what sense of forward planning and strategy there is in this game.

Can someone convince me that randomly determining who goes first each round is worth doing?

And I'm aware there are other games that do something similar - Malifaux, I think Battletech - but I'm pretty sure those involve unit by unit activations, and in some cases (Malifaux) the order can be manipulated at cost.

The chance of having a given player act twice in a row punishes people who really overextend their units, or otherwise positions itself poorly, or overcommits to an attack. It makes blitzing things a much more risky proposition, I think. It can also really pay off for the same reasons - if you go twice, you can move your guys around twice and get a better position to charge things, especially with cavalry - but you have to put yourself in huge danger to do it.

I think it adds another layer of consideration to your movements - while 8th edition was a lot like chess in terms of how things moved and charged, and you could set things up turns in advance, AoS seems to be much more about reading situations as they arise and taking chances that may or may not pay off. Playing cautiously can keep you safe, but taking a risk can make a huge difference - or get one of your units slaughtered.

It just adds a feel of uncertainty. Like all GW games, focus is on random and the fact that "rolling dice is fun in itself!".

So it's not a strange feature...if you follow that logic, of course.

I'm more annoyed by the "IGOUGO" old system. They should have made alternances in phases rather than in turns; it makes the waiting less long for your opponent.
