So this is a combination of thoughts on choosing your general and should apply to any size of game, starting with some observations for discussion (if I am wrong anywhere feel free to point this out)
1)
If you choose a hero as a general, it cannot join up with a unit so make sure it has a lot of wounds since your opponent will try to snipe it out. This is especially important if you outnumber your opponent since it is possibly you will have to choose it for assassination objective - because with enough long range firepower it will quickly be game over.
2)
As a tactic, with enough units to block a path to your general, you could place him behind a piece of terrain in your backfield to keep him out of sight. (especially important if you have a weak hero who has been chosen for assassination)
3)
Another tactic would be to advance him up the board behind another unit to block all line of site - this almost effectively acts as if he has joined the unit since he can't be sniped out. (would work well with smaller models - for example having a goblin general placed in the middle of a black orc unit)
4)
What if you don't take any heros and instead nominate the sergeant of your most powerful unit as your general - in the rules it just says to nominate a model, doesn't have to be a hero or wizard - this will grant him the inspiring presence ability and you can choose to remove every other model in the unit before him - this might be a good tactic even if you do have a hero, so that hero could use his other ability instead of inspiring presence.
