I love 40K and have a grey knight army painted in white that took me about 2 years to complete for about 4000 points (starting this hobby by attempting to shade in white was a great challenge that took a solid year of failed models before I got anywhere). I do some fantasy but have struggled with it in the past - but the new age of Sigmar has me excited.
One of the things I love about 40K is the use of terrain. Terrain tells a story of the battle, immediately, without even speaking to players who have a game in progress. That really appeals to me. These days, I am focused on constructing terrain for both 40K/fantasy and DnD.
My view of the hobby is: decide on what models are cool to you and from there develop your tactics. I am not a competitive gamer.
Best wishes.

Fluff of the game while playing is kinda forgotten these days...
But your effort will be appreciated.
