TO MODS AND ADMINS: I'm not exactly sure if this is where a thread like this belongs, so if you can let me know where would be an appropriate place, I would greatly appreciate that.

This is a thread I've made for a fluff-developing project named Starlight. It originally started out as a tabletop game developing project by a group of people (including me) but the "gaming" part of it is currently put on hold due to various reasons. However, after checking around dakka, people who were interested seemed to want a place where fluff could be shared, written and brainstormed together... so this is it.

If you are interested in Starlight, throw me and PM and I'll let you know of the details. If you've already talked to me... well, here is what is done so far. Anything new written, established, etc will be updated in this first post so check it out once in a while for updates.
Also for people participating in the project, I would like to request that anything you write be in spoilers box in order to minimize space and make it easy for people to find others' posts later on. Thanks!

NOT ALL OF THE STUFF is currently up but they are on its way. If anyone has a very specific question, toss me a PM.

Overview

Spoiler:

The date is MMMXXXIII, also known as year 3033 AD to mankind. The human race has come far from its primitive origins and has made much progress, sailing the sea of stars as brave explorers and warriors. While much has been accomplished with knowledge and understanding reaching its peak, the humans will never be satisfied for as long as exotic strange new places await them. Reaching out to the unknown, hoping for glory and power, humanity is discovering unique places, meeting exotic aliens and making war upon any who dare to disagree… it is the golden age of space exploration and conquest.

However, they are not alone in this quest for dominance. Numerous opponents and challenges await, not just humanity but, any and all intelligent civilizations of the galaxy. Each and every one of them are as powerful, enlightened and twisted in their own ways as the terrans are. Whether seeking grandeur, immortality, truth or simple survival, every sentient faction of the galaxy has a goal to achieve at all cost, no matter what the consequence. It is indeed a brutal time for the galaxy and its inhabitants, for war is now an inevitability. Whether or not any civilization manage to stand triumphant in the end or all life be wiped clean from the galaxy, one thing is certain; harsh times are coming to all. And any who are not prepared will surely perish in the flames of war and conquest.

Timeline (just a note, we only have the human part of the timeline down so far)

Spoiler:

2024 AD - People’s Republic of North Korea finally collapses after years of famine and economic breakdown. South Korea demands immediate disarmament of the entire military branch of North Korea, which they are forced to accept as remaining supplies dwindle. Before being destroyed, much of the military knowledge and data falls into the wrong hands makes their way to the Black Market.
2026 AD- Iran, with the help of several intact nuclear centrifuges supplied by North Korea, successfully completes its first nuclear test. Tensions in Middle East is fanned by Saudi Arabia obtaining nuclear weapons from Pakistan.
2028 AD - America is funneled into war with the Middle East at large when a failed nuclear weaponry released near Israel turned out to be of Iranian origin, made from pirated former North Korean technology. The US is ill equipped to fight a large scale conventional conflict. The Pentagon had previously decided that such a conflict would not arise, and had been steadily cutting budgets and personnel.
2029 AD - The Middle East is starting to be supplied with Russian equipment and advisers, but the EU is reluctant to pressure Russia, as almost ½ of their fuel supply comes from Russia. The US reconsiders to open another front against Russia, and trudges on against competent Middle Eastern armies.
2032 AD - Seeing a chance, China attempts a military conquest of East Asia, but is stopped by the Alliance of Pacific Nations, including United Republic of Korea, Japan and United States Pacific Command.
2034 AD - China suffers a critical naval defeat by the Alliance, but the US, having to deal with a draining conflict in the Middle East, is reluctant to pursue into mainland China. China surrenders, and agrees to a general disarmament. Faced with a strategic disadvantage, China turns to subterfuge and espionage.
2035 AD - The situation in the Middle East is diffused when popular revolts against the Middle Eastern government makes peace talks possible. However, after the losses sustained by two major conflicts in eight years, the American people strongly pressure their government for peace. The US takes an isolationist policy, and Pax Americana officially ends after 90 years.
2037 AD - China sets up Room 207, a unit aimed at replacing the US as the major ally of the Pacific Rim nations.
2050 AD - China pursues a path of nonviolence, thrusting into great economic growth where most thought would not be possible. The US slowly but steadily diminishes from the world stage, relinquishing many of the foreign bases.
2124 AD - China successfully undermines US influence in the Pacific Rim, inserting Chinese backed officials in most offices of the nations. The signing of the Pan Pacific Free Trade Pact solidifies the relationship between the Pacific Rim nations and China. It is followed by the Pacific Collective Security Agreement, essentially a military defense initiative between the nations.
2240 AD - India, now a successful world power in its own right, aspires for more territory. In a secret treaty, China allies with both the Russian Federation and India. Battle lines are being drawn, but the US retains its isolationist policy while EU struggling with an economical collapse, secretly being induced by Russia.
2245 AD - An alliance of India, China and Russia declares war on rest of the world and World War Three is initiated.
2259 AD - After 14 years of worldwide conflict, America is conquered by the Russian Federation, along with the EU. The Chinese and Indian government is incapacitated during the conflict, and Russia asserts control over both as well.
2260 AD - While victorious, the victory is pyrrhic. Most of the world is devastated, and the Russian Federation embarks on a rebuilding operation.
2343 AD - The world returns to a pre-2245 prosperity level.
2345 AD - The Russian Federation embarks on an ambitious project to colonize the solar system. The world is still 30% uninhabitable, and the return to prosperity has rekindled resource issues. Initial plans are to use drones and machines to terraform planets before the first human colonists can arrive. The process is arduous, and many prominent scientists believe that the technology required will take centuries to develop.
2600 AD - First colonial ships depart the Solar Sector, looking for fresh planets to colonize after Solar Sector’s resources has been drained from the Third Great War
2700 AD - Pax Russiana. A Golden Age dawns, and the new Solar Federation (constructed from the old Russian Federation) sees a flourishing of trade, technology, and the arts.
2880 AD - Solar Federation demands complete surrender of all colonial resources as Federation property. Colonies fiercely retaliate verbally yet the Federation does not retract its verdict. Tension between the colonial powers and Solar Federation escalates.
2920 AD - Past the far fringes of known space, a expedition team is on a mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. Part of an ongoing operation, the fleet is mostly mechanized, with some Zero Generation naval vessels as escort.
2932 AD - 12 years into the expedition, the team encounters the first known extraterrestrial entity. It was named the Corachnidites by Admiral Vladimir Kuznetsov, the highest ranking officer in the expedition fleet. The expedition team tries to engage in friendly coexistence, but is mostly destroyed by the Corachnidites. The FSV (Federation Science Vessel) Atlas was the sole surviving ship of the expedition, and news spread through the highest in command. In order to maintain peace, an information blackout of the Corachnidite menace is enforced. The President secretly issues massive “terrorist” strikes against the Federation, to instigate conflict, thereby reinvigorating the naval arm to repel the Corachnidite threat.
2933 AD - Solar Federation embarks on a wholesale renewal of the naval arm after the “Bloody Augustus” Incident, after the “Separatist” White Hands almost destroyed the State Duma.
2934 AD - Solar Federation demands a quota for resources and navy recruits from the colonies. The Colonies demand a reason for such measures, but the Federation remains tight lipped. With less than 30% control of the senate, the colonial powers have no veto ability, and seethes in the background. Relations between the colonial powers and the Solar Federation slowly erode.
2943 AD - Solar Federation receives its first batch of First Generation warships.
2957 AD - Solar Federation develops the Second Generation warships.
2970 AD - Long awaited, the Solar Federation develops the Third Generation of ships.
2984 AD - Fourth Generation of warships.
2990 AD - Esnoella, one of the largest and most prosperous colonies, along with 8 others, instigates what is known to be The Ostarvis Massacre. Knowing that a rebellion against the Federation without the vast majority of the colonial support would be impossible, the 9 colonies secretly create a genocidal plan in order to turn most of the colonies against the Federation. The 9 colonies send reports of an uprising in Ostarvis colony. The Federation, as per protocol, dispatched a military force to quell the rebellion and stabilize the situation. However, Esnoella using its new decoding AI managed to forge a fake message that changed the rules of engagement for the Federation task force, allowing the Federation force to use lethal action when necessary. Ostarvis was known to be a colony abused by the Federation numerous times, due to its close location to the Solar system. When the unexpected and unwelcome Federation force arrived, they were met with heavy resistance by the locals. The details of what exactly has happened is unclear yet the records show that the outnumbered and antagonized Federation troops were forced into using lethal action in order to subjugate the locals.
2991 AD - The Ostarvis Massacre’s news spread throughout the colonies and move for independence began. Esnoella and the 8 colonies formed the basis of what is now known as the Neo Terran Coalition, resulting in the Terran Independence War. Bloody battles are fought between colonial powers pushing for independence and Solar Federation who are seeking to keep its empire together.
3000 AD - The newly formed Neo Terran Coalition emerged victorious has an independent state. Solar Federation, its borders threatened by hostile Corachnidites and newly discovered Central Singularity, were not able to expand their military might to effectively stop the colonials from claiming victory as a new state. Robbed more than 50% of the colonial territories it previously possessed, Solar Federation faces near destruction at the hands of several hostile aliens and their fellow humans. In its desperate times, the Solar Federation goes under an extreme change in order to reorganize itself into a military nation called Confederacy of Humanity.

Locations

Spoiler:
Your normal Milky Way galaxy in a nutshell. Earth and solar system, as well as other celestial bodies known in real life are existent.

Currently established locations of important:

- Earth and Solar System - Home of humanity and central seat of power for the Confederacy of Mankind
- Esnoella - One of the 9 former colonial powers who caused the NTC's rebellion against Earth. Now the official capital of the NTC

Factions - short vignettes

Spoiler:

Confederacy of Mankind
Confederacy of Mankind consists of the direct descendants of the original humans of the solar system. Based on earth, the home of the human race, the Confederacy takes pride in its origins and lineage. Once a powerful nation rich with culture, the new Confederacy has now become a military nation. Knowing full well that future holds violence and conflict in store for all, Confederacy is preparing itself for a war of galactic proportions. Despite the losses it has suffered in the recent times during the its war against the Neo Terran Coalition, Confederacy is still a major might to be reckoned with, all the more dangerous now it has become a belligerent faction ready to begin war against any who dare to threaten them further.

Neo Terran Coalition
NTC, or Neo Terran Coaltion sought freedom from the oppression of Earth and made a dangerous gamble. Luckily, not only did they win the gamble but gained much from it. But breaking free from Earth's subjugation has not been easy and cost much blood. The Coalition looks down upon the former Confederacy with contempt, remembering the times of oppression and lack of freedom at the hands of the solar authorities. Idolizing the idea that they are the next evolutionary generation of mankind, NTC is a fresh, new power in the area. While not as belligerent or militarily powerful as its neighbors, NTC maintains a highly effectively military aimed towards defending the Coalition's interests to the end.

Central Singularity
Created by unknown forces in ancient times, the Singularity is a race of mechanical beings, composed of lights and clockwork. Classified as advanced AIs by other, organic species, the Singularity cares not for the agenda of others for they believe their creators' will return to them one day. Believing that they have been tasked by their Gods to "tend to their garden" while they return, Singularity use their analytical minds to accomplish their given tasks. Perceiving all other civilizations as "weeds" to be sorted out from their Gods' garden, their iron will cannot be bent for as long as they remain convicted.

Dorzelian Collective
Adept in both mechanical and biological technologies, the Drozelians use perhaps the most exotic forms of technology, surpassing even those of the Voidwalkers in terms of uniqueness. Once a powerful nation on the far side of the Milky Way, they have fallen so far and low by creating an organism known as the Corachnidites. When the creations turned on their creators, the true end began for the Drozelians. Splintered and on the verge of a civil war while their former homes are being razed to the ground, Drozelians are facing a grim future. Currently, their path of mass evacuation has lead them into the territories of other galactic powers. Determined to survive and escape from the onslaught of the Coracnidites, the Drozelians will employ every last trick up their sleeve in order to secure their goals.

Corachnidites - coming soon....

Pilgrims of The Void
More often called Voidwalkers by other races for their mastery over space through their significantly advanced technology, Pilgrims of the Void are a race of great tragedy and suffering. Originating from Andromeda galaxy, Voidwalkers escaped from their dying galaxy for reasons only known to them. The Great Exodus - the trip from Andromeda in their language - have wasted all but a small portion of their people, the remaining few arriving in Milky Way safely but with great losses. The Exalted One, leader of what was once a proud and powerful civilization, swears to honor his people and those who passed on by rebuilding their great empire in their new home. Although few in number and with very little territorial possession, Voidwalkers soon became recognized as a powerful force on the edge of the Milky Way galaxy. Seeking no friendship or peace, the Pilgrims use their advanced technology in application for warfare, seeking to crush all opposition in order to flourish once again as a true empire.

I'm not exactly sure of the exact way fluff should be organized currently so I'll list them in a bullet-point style under general categories. I expect things to clear up, details to be added and more... "professional" writing to be implemented as time goes on. Still adding stuff too.

Confederacy of Mankind

- The descendants of the original Earth-based humans. As such, based on the Solar system and controls a large territory around it.
- Used to be the only human faction called Solar Federation. However through the Terran Independence War in 2991 AD, Federation ended up rebuilding itself into the current Confederacy.
- Despite the fact that its territorial control has nearly halved thanks to the civil war with its colonies, it is one of the more powerful galactic powers currently due to being rebuilt into a complete military nation after 2991 AD. Without new colonies who drain resources for development, the Federation (soon to be Confederacy) was able to consolidate its resources and bring massive changes to its national image through extensive propaganda.
- Governmental structure is that of a confederacy formed between all PLANETS belonging to the faction. Back in the Solar Federation (who is, by the way, decedent of the Russian Federation from today who won WW3) days it was a smaller federation which only included the planets belonging to the Solar system, treating any other colonial or extra-solar planets as an asset.
- Mainly at open war against nearly all other factions currently.

FOR FLUFF DEVELOPERS: Your average, "normal" human faction. The basis of what every other faction is. Kind of like the Imperium or Man from 40k but not as omni-present in the galaxy as a whole and definitely not failing into darkness of grimdark. Can be considered to be the protagonists, if not for the fact that they are somewhat evil. However, moral reasoning can be ambivalent with this faction (as intended). For instance, extensive propaganda and being a military nation can be viewed as antagonistic or outright evil, but in the fluff there should be cases where the state actually cares for all its citizens and its militaristic approaches are actually effective at keeping the enemies at bay so that non-military part of the population can enjoy relative peace.

Neo Terran Coalition

- The second human faction that was created after the Terran Independence War in 2991 AD.
- Past colonial powers who rebelled against the oppressive Solar Federation who basically taxed them into hell while giving them essentially no political powers.
- Governmental system works based on a tithe system where a group of single, smaller scale governments are overseen by a larger, state-wide government (very much like current day USA). Each smaller government installs the Coaltion's law and justice system and pays its tithe (whether it be manpower, resource, production, etc) to the Coalition itself and Coalition grants them military protection and other broader services.
- The Coalition Council meets on Esnoella, the seat of the Neo Terran Coalition's power, which includes representatives from all the individual governments.
- Maintains a smaller but powerful military force, aimed more at defending territories rather than making war.
- Implied to have a corrupt governmental system where Esnoella and 8 other most powerful former colonial powers and making grand plans for dominance.

FOR FLUFF DEVELOPERS: Direct contrast to the Confederacy of Mankind, NTC represents freedom and one's self right. While seemingly good on the outside and for the most part, the corrupt governmental system where the Esnoella and 8 colonial powers (imagine Illuminati) are moving things in the shadows makes the NTC have a dark side. In the end, its very hard to tell whether or not Confederacy is better or not. Its a very gray area topic, of course as intended from design.

Drozelian Collective

- Originated from the far side of the Milky Way.
- Responsible for creating the Corachnidites, an organism that has destroyed their society through war and responsible for the poor state the Drozelians are.
- First contacted other factions when they were running from the advancing Corachnidites.
- The entire species as a whole now are nomadic, moving from planet to planet, stripping resources and taking whatever they can until the Corachnidites close in.
- Were highly advanced in science in general, especially biology (explains how they managed to make the Corachnidites in the first place).
- Uses a mix of traditional sci-fi mech science as well as bio science.
- Highly mobile due to their nomadic nature. While their science is very well advanced, they have not made much progress in the recent times due to their dire condition.
- On the verge of a civil war, where different sects are suggesting different ways of survival. All of them are working together for the greater good currently... for now. But at any notice, Drozelians could potentially fall into greater turmoil.
- Currently invading other factions' outer territories out of no choice, therefore starting up conflict on multiple fronts.

FOR FLUFF DEVELOPERS: Probably the most grimdark faction currently and the only one that has a solid potential to get wiped out. We could plan like a rebirth of the faction in later editions as the storyline progresses potentially. Like Drozelians actually claiming territories and putting their roots down to face other galactic powerhouses.

Central Singularity

- Religious Transformers in a nutshell.
- Created by unknown aliens a very long time ago. Singularity believe the the creators to be "Gods" and operate their entire race based on the religion made to serve them.
- Their main religious "text" is an encrypted coding that the Singularity attempts to solve. Every time a few codes are solved, a new prophecy or orders are given. And it is implied that these coding are encrypted in just the way where the most perfect message comes out in the most appropriate time, almost as if calculated. Implying the aliens who created the Singularity were extremely advanced.
- Ruled by the Trinity, a governmental structure that divides the entire society into 3 distinctive sectors; the religious, the industrial and the military. While the Religious sector is the most powerful on its own, it is and never will be more powerful than the other 2 sectors combined, maintaining balance. New beings (AIs) are created by the Religious sector. Military and industrial sectors do exactly what you'd think they'd do. Production of war-materials however falls to the industrial sector.
- Extremely religious almost to the point where they will not take action even if it means them harm unless there is an approval from the religious sector.
- Not a hivemind control of AIs, each individual has its own will and free action. And each of them even has different personalities, although rather limited from a human point of view.
- Consider their coding to be their soul and their current bodies nothing but a shell. As such they employ a modular technology where a Singularity may be inserted into different bodies and machines most suitable for their task. Similarly, their military operates wargears in similar ways. For instance, if the engines on a Battleship goes down and ship loses propulsion, a nearby smaller ship (like a Destroyer) can come and attach itself to the Battleship to push it along, giving it emergency mobility. Essentially all their hardwares have the ability to lock into each other.
- First contacted humanity during the Terran Independence War when their religious scriptures commanded them to explore a specific edge of their territory. Currently at war with the human race in general as the religious scriptures implies to "remove all who are not needed for the creators' return".

- FOR FLUFF DEVELOPERS: The faction was created with religious and moral implications in mind. Science and religion in history of mankind has been at odds with one another for numerous occasions but in Starlight, there is a faction who is not only based completely on religion (that has plausible backgrounds to make it not a religion at all) but the race itself is consisting of highly advanced technology. Also in terms of morality, Singularity to do produce and make use of other, "lower" AIs and expendable servants of sorts. Its like humans creating smarter chimps who can talk so they can be expendable servants for humanity.

Pilgrims of The Void

- Arguably most technologically advanced race in all of Starlight, although most of their technological marvels were non-violent in nature. Only recently have they started militarizing their ships.
- Originates from the Andromeda galaxy and arrived in the Milky Way only very recently. Pilgrims call this event The Exodus. Its implied the vast majority of the original people who made the travel have been lost on the way, details of which the Pilgrims are not willing to speak of under any circumstance. Upon arriving in Milky Way, The Exalted One became leader of the remaining people and vowed to build an empire in Milky Way in order to honor the dead.
- As seen above, Pilgrims have a culture that has a religious feel although due to their extremely secretive and mysterious nature its not quite understood with any clearance.
- Mostly called Voidwalkers by all other factions of Milky Way due to their mastery of physics through their advanced technology.
- Considered to be honorable and takes great pride in the fact. However, this only extends to beings who are worthy of respect which for MOST of the time only extends to others of the same race.
- First met humanity after the Terran Independence War. First seen by the Neo Terran Coalition (NTC) who fired upon the Voidwalkers as a mistake. Ever since has been at war against humanity in general.
- Finds the fact that humanity is split into 2 distinctive nations very curious. Voidwalkers believe that even if united as a whole with no constraint, no race is equal before their full might.
- Currently no other race knows what they truly look like for all members of the species wear a suit that hides their details. The suit also disintegrates their body down to molecular levels if at risk of being seen by other races since Voidwalkers consider it a great dishonor to have one's face be shown to its enemies.

- FOR FLUFF DEVELOPERS: Easy the faction with the least amount of fluff and most likely will stay that way since they are the typical "mysterious with high-tech" faction. Could explore deeper into their intricate culture as well as what The Exodus actually was and why it happened.

General Notes:

- Corachnidites are NOT described really because honestly speaking, we have not decided on their true nature yet. We have the most important, basic outlines (such as being created by Drozelians, slowing wiping them out, approaching from the far side of Milky Way with the intention of destroying everything) but we have not established exactly what they are. We can actually discuss that together and vote on it.
- As you may have noticed, everything was designed to have a sense of moral, religious, etc implications. Somewhat philosophical, I suppose we can imagine it as making a satirical sneer at what future may look like in real life.
- There is no outright good or bad. Everyone has their own reason for what they do.
- Lastly, the game is NOT grimdark like 40k. Definitely. While it does have war and it does have blood and conflicts, another main focal point about the game should be the mystery and exploration of space. The feeling of "there is still much we do not know, only the future will tell us". You could imagine it like the space opera/fantasy theme like original Star Wars or Star Trek in a way. In the fluff of Starlight, humanity (and other races) are still meeting new aliens (albeit mostly enemies) exploring space, learning new things and "sailing a sea of stars". I personally somewhat imagine it like Captain Harlock or Galaxy Express 999.

Military, War and how it works in Starlight

- Being a sci-fi... its never going to be to the very fine point, scientifically accurate. Some laws of physics will be ignored and some most obvious realistic possibilities perhaps ignored. As Mark Twain once said... "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
- Naval (space navy) might is the main military operation for all galactic powers. While ground combat and even surfacexspace combat does occur, it is to the understanding of all factions that once outer space is taken, any ground resistance is sure to be wiped out at one point through continuous bombardments and added reinforcements. Just like how siege warfare works. As such, every faction puts majority of its efforts into naval mights.
- All factions run a combined fleet where various ship types and classes are mixed in order to achieve maximum effectiveness. A good way to imagine it is like in US's Carrier Battle Group. Anywhere from single-pilot Fighters to massive Battleships.
