(ISSUE #1: In post-battle review, I believe the Cryx player shorted herself a point. Any suggestions?)
Battlefield: no terrain in deployment zones, Buildings and Forests in diagonally opposite quadrants in the center.
Scenario: None
(ISSUE #2: We think this means the only victory condition is assassination, but only discovered that midgame.)
Deployment:
Cryx deployed first, with the jacks central, the Bane Thralls on her left flank and Denny following the jacks.
Khador deployed the widowmakers on the left flank; Sorscha, Dog and Juggy behind the forest on the left; WGDS central; and Aiyana and Holt behind a building to my right.
Game:
Cryx 1: General Advance, all jacks run for arc node positioning.
Khador 1: Widowmakers advance but stay outta run distance from arc nodes, Juggy runs into the woods, WGDS get iron flesh, shatterstorm, desperate pace, bob and weave, fearless/tough and magical attacks. They advance and a rocketeer knocks a couple boxes off a deathripper.
Cryx 2: Defilier moves up to WGDS, Deathrippers and Slayer shuffle up, Bane Thralls set up for massive flanking action. Deneghra fails a boosted to-hit with Hellmouth on the WGDS. The defilier shoots a couple WG to death.
Khador 2: I'm more scared of the Arc Nodes than the Bane Thralls. Sorscha upkeeps Iron flesh, drop shatter storm, and plinks a few wounds off a jack before cycloning away. The Widowmakers plink a couple boxes of a deathripper, The Juggy advances through the forest. A&H Kiss a Defilier. The WGDS (still tough, but forgot to bob and weave) CRA the Defilier's arc node off, destroy a deathripper, and plink the Slayer down a bit.
Cryx 3: Deneghra Fails Hellmouth AGAIN. She Marks the WG for Death. She feats, capturing the Juggy, Sorcha and puppy, and most of the WG. The defiler sprays a few more WG, and a couple bane thralls make a long charge into a couple WG, killing them. Everything avoids the Juggy's Freeze You range (Sorcha bond).
Khador 3: Can't move during advance you say? huh. Well, the Widowmakers, Sorscha, the unengaged WG plink more wounds off jacks. At this point all the Cryx jacks are pretty damaged.
Cryx4: Deneghra upkeeps the deathmark, and fails to hit with another spell. Bane Thralls pile in, killing A&H (outta LOS, but the thralls just moved, d'oh!), and a bunch more WG.
Khador4: Well, that's a lotta bane thralls on my flank. Widowmakers plink the last wounds off the slayer, Juggy charges and kills a deathripper, Sorscha and Joe shoot bane thralls. WG don't have Iron flesh or tough (didn't seem to help) but got +3 str, so did some combined melee attacks and killed off some thralls.
(ISSUE #3. During this game we played Deneghra as incorporeal unless she makes melee attacks. After looking at her card more closely post-game, I believe she can be incorporeal every other round instead.)
Cryx5: Deneghra upkeeps deathmark and throws some venom around. Bane thralls kill all but one winter guard.
Khador 5: At this point we determine that the only victory condition is assasination. As we believe Deneghra to be incorporeal, Sorscha is the only one left who can hurt Deneghra, and a ton of bane thralls can still kill Sorscha. Widowmakers polish the last Cryx jack. Juggy tramples, but can only reach 1 Bane thrall. Winter guard and Joe each charge a bane thrall. Sorscha and Joe shoot, Sorscha has shatterstorm and kills a few with the blasts.
Cryx 6: Deneghra debuffs the Juggy, bane thralls charge and destroy it. Charge + weapon master hurts.
Khador 6: Widowmakers can only get close enough to shoot 2 bane thralls with extreme close range sniping. Joe charges and kills one. Sorcha plinks away.
Cryx7: At this point there are two thralls and Deneghra v. the widowmakers, Joe, Sorscha and Dog. But we think Denegrha is always incorporeal. Deneghra camps her focus and moves up, I believe to threaten the widowmakers. A bane thrall charges Joe, gets intercepted and killed by the dog. the bane champ charges and kills Joe.
Khador 7: Widowmakers fail to kill the bane champ. Dog charges and kills him. Sorscha charges, feats and manages to put 6 or so damage on Deneghra, and Iron Fleshes herself.
Cryx 8: Deneghra doesn't like her odds at hitting Sorscha with Iron flesh. She runs off, dog intercepts (can't hurt cuz incorporeal, but might screw her aim up). She venoms some widowmakers to death. Tries to venom the dog and fails, tries to swipe at the dog and fails, thereby shedding incorporeal in our version of her rules.
Khador 8: Surviving Widowmakers fail command and runoft. Marksman misses a potshot at the now corporeal Deneghra. Dog fails to bite Deneghra. Sorscha drops iron flesh, charges in and kills Deneghra!
Postgame thoughts:
- Read them cards. Read-em! Deneghra not being incorporeal all game would have changed the dynamics considerably.
- Sorscha is more versatile than I had given her credit for, she contributed a lot of direct damage, and got the assassination! I had her figured as a support caster, but her toolbox gives her good range and melee game.
- Wardog schenanigans are a lot of fun.
- Bane thralls are nasty, but the rest of the cryx army didn't seem to accomplish much. Poor rolls for Hellmouth hurt. And my whole army concentrated on the jacks. I don't know if something else would have synergized better with thralls.
Thanks for reading and for any thoughts you share!
