Hey guys, thank you for taking some time to answer my question. I've looked a lot over the internet and didn't find anything on that matter. Also, I'm not quite sure this is the right sub-forum for posting this question, but I didn't see any specific to rules or to Warhammer 40k [Only War] RPG

Here's the deal
I'd like to know if the power range, for an attack power, is a hard limit or if it's dealt like any other ranged weapon since all the attack powers relate to a ranged weapon "rate of fire"

Ex: Psy Rating of 2 for Spontaneous combustion = range of 40 metres (20m X PR) So is that power hard capped to a MAX of 40 m (unless you use a different power level of course) or is that power subject to range brackets with penalties for trying to extend the range of the power?

I hope I'm clear enough in my explanation

Also, if possible, that'd be great if something in a book would cover it up. Either way, thanks for sharing you RAW / RAI or even houserules if you have any!

The fact is I think a small range like 20m or even 40m seems really really short to me. AKA what are you suppose to do before something gets in range? Let's hope the enemy doesn't have even a pistol because he's outranging you, so he won't come close anyway. And once something's in range, at 20-40m mark, well that mob's in your face now very likely to charge you next round and a psyker in melee, well let's say I'll bet some thrones on the enemy emerging victorious...

Thanks again for your answers!

For psychic powers it is usually a hard limit, since most of their powers do not suffer ranged attack penalties or anything (since they don't generally make BS tests to land them), and there are specific exceptions made for some powers that permit you to extend the range by using more PR to push it. This sets them apart from firearms, which have a maximum range limit.

Within that range, a Psyker with the right powers is incredibly deadly. Psychic Blade? Has PEN equal to x2 WP (thus average 10) and throws a bucket of dice for damage, using the Psyker's WP in place of WS to determine hits. Telekinetic Shields, Holocaust... there's all kinds of powers that the right Psyker can defend themselves with.

Of course, if you're a Diviner... well, one, you're one of the least-obvious types of Psykers but, also, shouldn't be on the frontline.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
