SO I just bought some of the new micro machines for star wars hoping to use them for X-Wing.
Worked out pretty well. There's one set from Force Awakens with 2 tie and 2 new xwings and a set with 2 xwings, 1 tie, 1 tie advanced and 1 y wing.
The xwings are almost exactly the right size and the tie and just a touch smaller. THey even have holes in the bottom to stick on the stand.
I got extra stands by buying the pack from Wizkids for Attack wing (came with 2 big, 6 small bases and flight stands).
The big bases I'm using for the bigger ships Falcon and Slave 1 that were released a little while ago. They're not the new black series ones, and come with clear stands. They are smaller than the x-wing game ones, but the discrepancy isn't too bad.
Now I just need the extra dials...

By the time you buy all the pilot cards, dials, upgrades, base cards, etc, is it really worth the trouble to have ships that looks worse and are out of scale?

This.
If this was 40k, I'd say knock yourself out, but FFG doesn't charge and arm and a leg for this game. You might as well get everything officially from them. Plus, they're a pretty good company in my opinion, so they deserve the business.

I wasn't going to buy any more cards or upgrades. This is more about using the extra pilot base inserts. We don't play terribly competitively, so I'm not worried about duplicating the upgrades, etc. Now I can try 2 falcons just for kicks with Han piloting one and lando the other.(based on the cards from 1 boxed set from ffg). I just have to make some dials.

If you don't play competitively, yeah, it's a pretty good deal as long as you can figure out a good way of approximating movement dials. I've got my fair share of internet print-outs of cards, though find the movement dials enough of a pain to not get whole fake ships.

If it comes to that, you could just write down your chosen manoeuvre on a sheet of paper each turn.

I actually had some old Micro Machines sitting around from the 90s, and have used this to stretch my fleet on occasion. The basic idea is you can turn two different expansion packs into the same ship. The fighters are fairly well scaled. I highly recommend it as a stopgap measure for new players, or those without sufficient ships to run the list they'd really like- it's 6 bucks for 3 micro machines. For doubling and experimenting with new ships, I think that's a very reasonable investment.
