Hi guys, just found X Wing and have loved it! So i went ahead and made a board for it. I made the board using a few round objects, a magazine and a few spray cans.
[Thumb - Board Black Spray.jpg]
Spray the board gloss black.

[Thumb - Planet and Two Moons.jpg]
Using white as a base then layering colours i makes my planets and moons, i then use crumpled news paper to remove layes of paint.

[Thumb - Whole Board Sprayed Planets.jpg]
Add a big star and some shadowing.

[Thumb - Tempates Applied.jpg]
Place templates once paint dries and spray black again. After the black i use white on my finger tip and flick the white paint to make stars.

[Thumb - Templates removed and stars added.jpg]
Remove the templates.

[Thumb - Rebels and Empire Face off on the new board.jpg]
Line up your forces for a game!

Nice! Wish this'd been around before I got lazy and bought a mat.

That turned out really well!

I'm tempted to try something like it, but I don't really have the space for it in my house.

Did you use mdf, or masonite?

It looks like MDF board to me... that's what I would use if I built one.

You left out the "wait for it to dry step"

I used 3mm mdf but the thicker you get, the straighter it will stay

Hahaha yes wait for the paint to dry and yep 3mm MDF is what I use for my boards. Thanks for the comments guys.

I did mine similar to this, but used a roll of marine vinyl as the base so that I can still roll it up.

Your planets turned out fantastic though (better than mine). Nice walk-through.

I wanted to make my boards in mdf, back when I was playing a lot of 40K. A colleague of mine told me to buy (failure of my English language skills) 3/8" wooden boards instead. Things have stayed straight for 7 years, even though they spend most of their time upright. I hinged them with piano hinges, and I just sleeve them in two-sided fabric to give them a smooth texture, and then add whatever tablescapes, mat or whatever I want to play on.
