Subject: Adeptus Mechanicus vs. Necrons Campaign [Pics]
Game 1 (500 pts) of a small campaign a buddy of mine and I are playing.
Fluff
Spoiler:
The dead world of Cemex has been an object of intense curiosity to the Adeptus Mechanicus of Teza for quite some time. Anomalous energy readings have drawn in several Explorator vessels, some of which do not return. Decades of investigation have revealed that below the surface lies extensive xenos complexes, and somewhere within, an energy source of incredible potency awaits those with will enough to retrieve it.
Years of trying to force a breach of the tombs has resulted in little more than dead or vanished Skitarii and servitors. To make matters worse, representatives of the Ordo Xenos and Ordo Machinum have demanded to be a part of the excavations. With the two forces grudgingly combined, the main excavation site is close to making a final breach.
Offended by Inquisitorial meddling, Tech-Priest Dominus Numerian VII Maxentius Menelauis has quietly started a second site, and is almost ready to enter the tomb. However, the tomb's defenders, sensing the imminent danger, materialize from nowhere to cleanse Cemex of the invading vermin.
The mission was Reconnaissance in Force from the old Battle Missions book. I obviously need to work on my photography skills. Most of the pics are much better resolution when viewed in the gallery and zoomed in.
Vanguard Alpha is warlord, with the morale test re-roll bubble.
Nihilakh Dynasty Catacomb Command Barge
10x Warriors
5x Immortals - Tesla Carbines
5x Triarch Praetorians
Overlord is warlord, has Eternal Warrior.
Game Setup
Spoiler:
In this mission, we placed three objectives. They are silver crates/canisters - one on or next to each building, and one near the barrels.
The Necrons secretly write down a table edge as their deployment zone. The AdMech deploy anywhere on the table 12" off the edges.
AdMech Deployment:
Necrons always take first turn.
Turn 1
Spoiler:
The tomb's defenders materialize.
Xenos contacts reported
Tactical withdrawal
Necrons The Necrons move onto the board. The Warriors shoot some long range gauss at the Dunecrawler but do nothing. Everything else shoots the rangers, killing 3 including the Alpha. Rangers break and run.
AdMech The Rangers rally. The Vanguard and Ruststalkers surge forward towards the Necron line. The Onager shuffles closer as well. Fire from the Vanguard and Onager flatten the Triarch unit. The Rangers take snap shots at the barge, and the arquebus actually hits. We misunderstood the chariot rules here, and he let me allocate the wound to the Overlord, who failed his RP.
Turn 2
Spoiler:
Top of turn 2.
The Lord is unhorsed
Necrons The Warriors advance and pump gauss fire into the Dunecrawler, causing 2 glances. The Immortals and the barge fire Tesla into the Vanguard, killing a couple. The barge charges, and the Overlord takes another wound to plasma overwatch. In combat, the Vanguard are slain, except for the Alpha, who actually makes his 6+ FnP.
AdMech The Dunecrawler knows no fear and crawls into the crater, missing his point blank shot on the Warriors. It charges, luckily surviving the overwatch fire. Not so luckily, he fails to make charge range. The Ruststalkers charge into the barge and take the last wound off the Overlord. Still playing the chariot rules incorrectly, we left the empty barge on the table. Dunecrawler fails IWND roll.
Turn 3
Spoiler:
End of turn 3.
Necrons The Immortals shuffle away a bit and electrocute a Ruststalker with the help of the barge, which flees over to the objective near the barrels. The Warriors rapid-fire 20 gauss shots into the Dunecrawler, who has 1 HP left. A single glance is caused, and...it makes the 6++ Emanatus save! It really isn't the Necrons' day.
AdMech The Vanguard Alpha takes potshots that do nothing. The Ruststalkers flank the Warriors in preparation for a charge. The Dunecrawler misses again. The Rangers shoot at the barge and do nothing. Ruststalkers and Crawler charge the Warriors. I lose a Ruststalker, but the Warriors lose 6, fail leadership, and are swept. IWND fails again, and will do so for the rest of the battle.
Turn 4
Spoiler:
Last stand of the Immortals
Necrons Immortals shoot the Stalkers and take a wound off. The barge does nothing that I remember.
AdMech Rangers do nothing to the barge again, but are contesting the objective. Shooting kills one Immortal, and then they are wiped out by the Stalkers and Crawler in combat.
Turn 5
Spoiler:
No pics.
Necrons The barge tries to wipe out the rangers with shooting and HoW hits, but fails to, thus losing any chance of victory.
AdMech The Stalkers and Crawler stalk and crawl towards the barge.
We roll, and game continues.
Turn 6
Spoiler:
Omnissiah be Praised!
The barge stands its ground, and is dataspiked and grenaded into nothingness.
We both were new to the armies, and made quite a few mistakes. It was also a small battle, so there wasn't a huge amount of tactical depth after two Necron units were wiped out. The forces will be escalating as we pump out painted units for the campaign.
Next up, a Heralds of Ruin Kill Team game as the Skitarii forces scour the tomb for the artifact. I'll try to take some more interesting shots of the game this time. Thanks for looking.

*SNIP*
No offence, but I've gone over these pics three or four times and... There's no real sense of what's happening. It would be much clearer with a sentence or two for each picture explaining what's going on. You do this a couple of times, but it's not really enough to appreciate a narrative, what worked, what failed, when someone got lucky or a unit over performed. .. It's a collection of mid-game pics, which is fine, but it's not a battle report as yet.

None taken. Your points are valid, and I was thinking along those same lines myself. I've sorted it a bit, and will add turn commentaries later today. Thanks for taking the time to critique, and feel free to point out anything else I could do better.
