How important is the base size for figures in this game? I would like to use some dwarves for kings of war as well and I am trying to figure out what base to use. KoW uses 20mm squares for infantry but SBG seems to use 25mm circles? It looks like that is the size included in the box I got. I would like to know if I use 20mm squares if they would still be good for lotr.

I think it is essential to use round bases because if you lose combat you have to fall back 1" or you get trapped. Square bases also change base to base contact mechanics because you can simply touch the corner.

Then there's 1" control zones extending from the bases.

Well, there are a few ways round this.

One is to play LotR with squares. It's very far from ideal, but won't mess things up too badly, so if you're playing amongst friends who would be cool with it then the game would still work.

Second option (And the one I prefer) is the inverse; KoW does not care what kind of bases models are on, just the size of the unit base, and similarly isn't bothered by the number of models on a base. So put them on rounds, use them for LotR, then stick 12 rounds on a 100x80mm tray for a regiment of '20' models. This is easiest, makes your minis go futher in KoW and personally I think it's better aesthetically as well.

Thirdly, if you're set on the 'right' number for KOW and thus use squares, you could make some card circles and just tack them to the bottom of your bases for LotR. It's not ideal and will take some time before/after each game, but is your best option if you're set on squares.
