So, who has seen this?

I had really high hopes for this movie. I thought the trailer looked great, and I like all of the actors. I wound up not liking it very much at all though, despite a strong story, great writing, lovely cinematography, and good acting.

Spoiler:
It was just such a.... downer, man. Everything was hopeless in the end, none of it really meant anything. I don't feel like there was very much of a narrative arc.

Ultimately, if you saw Prisoners, it was the same director, and it had very much the same tone. So, if you liked that, you'd probably really like this.

However, I think I'd recommend the excellent Narcos on Netflix instead. It's less depressing.

Sounds like a fairly accurate movie about the Mexican Drug War then.

And yeah, everything about what goes on down there depresses me. Damn shame.

It was depressing more or less because the main character (Blunt) never achieves any real kind of catharsis. She basically spends the entire film being out of her depth and abused, and ends the film being out of her death and abused lol.

The film is definitely... devoid of warmth. But thinking about it I guess it's fair. It's a fairly serious topic.

Latinos I work with tell me stories of what people in the cartels do down there and I wonder how it is there aren't more Mexicans trying to get into this country. Something they say to me is that gringos up here don't give a damn how many brown men die down there as long as they can get their drugs.
