Subject: How to use interceptors?
|
 |
Hurr! Ogryn Bone 'Ead!
|
Is it best to use each interceptor as an individual? Or is it best to use them in formation?
I can see benefits of both.
I fly:
4x royal guard+PTL
I have run into problems with both methods...
When staying in formation, I find it difficult to have the room I need to stay out of firing arcs, but when I fly them all separately, I have a hard time not being picked off.
Let me know what you think
Thanks

I run them as high PS arc-dodgers, but then again I have difficulty running formations in general.

Something like this you want to run them loose, but your setup is much more important. You need to have your primary target and secondary pre-selected and set up to go after them. Turn 1 is your positioning move, turn 2 your setup, then turn 3 all of your Ints should be jumping the target and focusing him down.

Individual, and high PS. You basically want Fel, Jax, or a Royal Guard. Turr and Tetran are weaker choices, but can be situationally useful. The rest of the TIE interceptor pilots are a very questionable buy.
If you want to try a swarm, you have some options:
Royal Guard with VI are PS8, and so can actually arc dodge pretty well (especially considering their price). If you want to run a swarm, you can take 4 of these /w VI and autothrusters.
Saber Squadron falls into a weird points tier, as you only have 2 points worth of elite upgrades availible if you do a 4 ship swarm /w autothrusters. You also severly limit your ability to arc-dodge.
Avenger squadron is overpriced. You can't do autothrusters+5 ships with these pilots.
Alpha Squadron lets you take 5 interceptors, all with autothrusters. The issue here is that you throw away most of the utility of your boost and barrel roll actions, so that you're basically just going to point and pray. That works well enough for TIE swarms, but not for interceptors. A single elite interceptor (e.g., a competently flown Soontir Fel) could slowly pick apart this swarm.

Tie Interceptors are great arc dodgers, using them in formations kind of defeats their strongest ability to dodge arcs...
You could run a 3 ace list such as
Soontir Fel
- PTL
Carnor Jax
- Outmanuever or PTL
Turr Phennir or royal guard or tetran cowall (i perfer phennir because his ability makes for some fun!)
- VI
and autothrusters on all of them and i think you can get 2-3 stealth devices.
Royal Guard are great assist ships but alone they're nothing amazing especially in formations.
A great list is to have 2 Royal Guards with Veteran Instincts so they're PS8 and have them with Rexler Brath. They're all PS8 which is nice and that allows the Royal Guard to attack first. The Royal Guard take out shields and Brath decimates hull with his pilot ability. There are other combinations where you can use 2 Royal Guards quite effectively.
