I've seen it mentioned a few times that Cult Mechanicus are garbage without Skitarii, Knights and/or other allies.
Could someone explain what makes them so bad on their own?

Electro-Priests are pretty bad
Kastelan robots are Meh, Good is used right
Tech priest is god when used with mech army lists
Battle servitors are pretty good, but are relativley short ranged
Plus you lack vehicles

Nothing makes them BAD, they just lack options and verity on their own, being a mini-dex and all
(and they mesh with skitarii so good)
Remember-this is dakka. on this forum most people gauge units as either "OP as feth" or "completely unplayable trash" with nothing in between.

I don't get why they mesh with skits so well. (Outside of derpvocation)
1) skits detract from canticle count
2) skits do not provide power multipliers and don't work well with cult mech multipliers (not many vehicles expensive/durable enough for a Dominus to repair. They don't bring the psychic powers that would buff cult mech shooting.
3) they don't provide transports.
Aesthetically yes they're the same army but synergistically they don't seem great.
Look at Space Marines for instance. Librarius Conclave gives you mass divination and Termy libbies to tank overwatch for your land raider full of Electropriests. Meanwhile you can drop Breachers and destroyers in pods to demolish anything you want.

honestly the problem is they should be one army.
That said, the cult on it's own is very limited.

I find skitarii optimal because they are the exact oppisit of cult. The cult units are very over priced because of canticles so the only i would take- destroyers and dominus. Most of the skitarii are very low point close range units which helps with choosing docterines, so skitarii evens out the cults 30 point sniper troop with a 9 point horde killer. Also if you pick dominus and roll a 6 and put him with the vangaurd or get the shrouded rule with vangaurd you get a unit with stealth and shouded from canticles. my army at 1000 pts looked like this:
2 units of 10 vangaurd
2 onagers with neutron lazer
1 dominus
3 destroyers
1 Canoptec Harvest

what you end up getting is an insanly shooty, scary overwatch, slightly durable and immobile army. All the skitarii get scout, and since vangaurd only have an 18 inch gun i sut shoot at whats close and hide them in cover, which isnt a problem anyways because they can kill anything, even takes if they take arc rifles
