Just getting back into 40k, still not decided what army to play.
Been watching a few games in my local store but they seem to mainly be shooting focused lists.

Just wondering if there are any competitive CC armies out there as i havent played this edition and ive noticed no more charging out of rhinos

I really enjoy nemesis strike force Grey Knights

Low model count, which I really really like. I like putting time and effort into my models, but I only have limited time to put into the hobby. This way I get the result I want without having to invest enormous amounts of time.

It's also cool feeling 'elite' in a battle. The enemy is running at you with a horde of Dakka while you Deep-Strike into 50 models with 5 terminators and a Dreadknight or two.

Both of the above also plays out of the awesome fluff GK's have. The elite of the elite.

Specifically in regards to closs combat, nemesis force weapons galore, hammerhand........... FUN FUN.

My 2 cents

You could run swarms as most people don't prepare for that, but timescales mean rushing, rushing means mistakes.

Khorne are fast and have the 5++ so not too bad.

But i'm not a big tourny player so most will disagree with these options. At the end of the day 7th edition is all about shooting. However some deathstar units focussed on melee can do well with shooting support.

If you are looking for a truly competitive assault list your best bets are:

Daemons - (lots of fast, survivable, versatile, hard hitting, and cost efficient assault units, supported by powerful psykers)

Imperial knights - (fast moving, tough, versatile super heavy walkers, with D-strength close combat attacks and stomp, they also get some strong shooting to boot. Imperial knights are also battle brothers with every imperial army as icing on the cake.)

Space wolves - (basic troops with 2 attacks and counter assault, powerful melee HQ's and one of the best assault units in the game in the form of thunderwolf cavalry. Also battle brothers with every imperial army which can make for some powerful deathstar combinations.)

Melee focused Necrons - (Destroyer lords are rather tough, hard hitting HQ's, Flayed ones are point for point one of the most efficient assault units in the game, wraiths are one of the fastest, toughest and most versatile assault units in the game, and tomb spyders are really low cost monstrous creatures that can be fielded in squads.)

Black Templars are going strong.

Drop Pod Assault - Stick Everything (everything) in pods. The backbone of the force should be 9-man crusader squads with a sacrificial neophyte. Spearhead it on T1 with grav-devastators and Dreadnoughts.

Land Raider Assault - Black Tide with 2-3 Av14 bawkses in a 1500-1750 game. Put oversized crusader squads in them, to get ObSec Av14 4HP walls that can capture objectives, and shove enemies off them.

And because Neophytes got a +1 WS/BS buff, they can hit just like their power armour brothers

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Thanks for the feedback.

I kinda like most armies, but i much prefer moving and cc than sitting in deployment blasting models off the board.

Think im leaning towards necrons.

How well do land raiders survive in this edition? i like the idea of them but used to always end up being a point sink for me in past.

Most land raiders are destroyed in the first two turns with the abundance of melta, str d weapons, necron gauss, and haywire. I stopped fielding my land raider for a while since it was consistently destroyed pretty easy. Lots of ignore cover on those weapons too.

That's just me though, I've had the worst luck with them lately even though I love them so much.

It can really depend on your meta and how you intend to play.

If you're in a tournament scene then you can expect all of those nasty AV14 popping weapons. Might make your Land Raiders overcosted smoking craters.

But if you're in a more casual environment where there's not a ton of StrD spam and haywire shenanigans than a Land Raider can be a fun tank to run.

Most armies (excluding Tau and IG) can run a CC oriented army, some much more effectively than others.

I have terribad luck with armour most of the time, but whenever I field my Raiders I take two.

One has loads of Crusaders and an EC (my current opponents have developed a phobia of him), and the other has Hammernators. This either results in my opponent splitting their T1 fire, resulting in both Raiders surviving, or they get tunnel vision on the one that looks most threatening, and let the other hit their lines.

I also find its best to take a lone drop pod with a dreadnought, just to f*k with them on T1 and further restrict their anti-LR powers.

Khorne deamonkin might be worth considering.

Or a melee based CSM? Dunno if that's any viable but I heard Kharne the Betrayer is a pretty swell guy to be around.

Don't forget super-friends...probably the most effective CC army at the moment.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

KDK can run a fairly nasty CC list, it's not the most competitive. But it does fairly well for itself

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
