Hello everybody. Here is my first attempt at writing fluff that's not a huge list of planets, people and statistics. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it! The title will be explained in future chapters, this is sort of an introduction. C&C is always welcome and if you have any ideas for story progression please post below! (I have a general idea but was wondering what you would do). Anyways, here it is:
Dragons in the Mist - Part I
Chapter 1:
I awoke with my face in the mud; I lay solitary in a field of blood and corpses. The putrid smell of rotting carcasses made me gag uncontrollably, while cold wind pierced my skin like a 1000 frozen needles... I slipped in and out of consciousness while trying to summon the energy to move. After what seemed like hours I began to regain my strength, finally summoning the willpower to stand.
I looked around and found myself in a crater, surrounded by death and destruction. Little remained of the fortified position we had constructed - just smouldering ruins and flooded trenches. Out of the corner of my eye I sensed movement: I dove to the ground and grabbed a shotgun from a deceased guardsman beside me, turning around while shoving a magazine into the weapon. To my surprise I wasn't met with a blue-skins pulse rifle aimed at my head; but the outstretched hand of a fellow guardsman. "At ease son." Said a gruff voice as I was pulled to my feet. I holstered my newly-found shotgun and looked at the guardsman, his face was old and held many scars. His left arm was missing, all that remained was a crudely-tied bandage covering a bloodied stump.
"Well? Are you just going to stand there?" He questioned as a backpack was thrust into my arms, "You'll be needing this, now let's get moving. Try and find a voxcaster so we can relay a transmission to the ship." He wandered off, occasionally squatting down and picking up magazines, only to throw them back down in disgust after finding them empty. I began trudging through the mud towards a pile of rubble that was once presumably a bastion; the ground clinging to my boots with each step.
As I got closer I could hear the faint crackle of a voxcaster. After minutes of vigorous searching I found the device. Or what was left of it. It was a miracle it was still operating, as it lay half submerged in smouldering concrete. I picked it up and examined it thoroughly; it was missing half the casing, and the power pack was exposed. I began to mess with the various dials and switches - hoping to find a frequency linked to the fleet above.
1st frequency... Nothing.
2nd frequency... Nothing.
"3rd time's the charm." I muttered as I turned the dial a fraction more. Success! The monotonous humming was replaced with garbled speech that could barely be registered as human. A few minor adjustments and a few healthy whacks allowed the voice to be heard clearer:
"All Regiments retre-" buzzed the guardsmen on the other end of the voxcaster, "-fall back to evacuation poin-", "-defences have been overrun by-"
I punched the air in relief letting out a mighty "Whoop"; rushing other to the other guardsman and telling him the good news. "Hey! The fleet is still in orbit" I yelled whilst waving my arm above my head. The guardsman turned and smirked as he began walking towards me, "Nice job kid, now let's get out of here." He announced as he reached for the mic, "This is Captain Kingsreach of the Demeter 306th requesting immediate evac at location 04, 77, 9-Foxtrot; medical attention required."
"Request noted, Captain. Bird en route to your location." Buzzed the voxcaster.
"So kid, how'd you end up in the 306th?" Kingsreach queried, "Me Sir? I was brought up on Demeter. Lived life tending the farm; needed something more exciting than ploughing fields. You Sir?" I replied whilst gazing up at the emerald green sky above. "Grew up on Cebastus. Enrolled to the PDF Academy at 12, graduated at 15. Fighting in the 306th by 20. Mostly combatting pirates and smugglers until recently..."
The distinct sound of a sonic boom could be heard as a Valkyrie descended from orbit. The jet black craft blocked out the sun as it came in to land, creating a cloud of dirt and dust as it settled on the ground. The rear hatch opened with a grinding clunk and a squad of ATLAS (All Terrain Light Assault Support) drones fanned out and secured a perimeter.
A female figure emerged and took off her helmet. "Captain! I'm surprised you're still alive!" She exclaimed, she then pointed at me, "Let alone him. Thank the Emperor you're both alive. We took heavy losses planetside and we are going to need every last guardsman we can get our hands on. Now come on, let's get off of this rock!" The ATLAS drones began to embark onto the Valkyrie, shortly followed by me and the Captain. The engines roared to life as the craft shot across the sky into orbit above the planet. The scene I was met with up here was no better than the one down there...

Very nicely written, I always enjoy reading about the Guard. Excellent work

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Thanks! I was worried it sounded too cliche. At least somebody liked it, I can rest knowing I didn't completely mess up. XD
