Ok..back in the early to mid 80's I remember watching a cartoon movie on one of the movie channels like HBO or Showtime.

I distinctly remember that is had kind of a 1920's/30's look/feel to it (especially with the vehicles).

The story involved a gang...and two of the main characters were dressed in (I think) red/burgundy gang jackets. They wore steam-punk like goggles. The more likeable of the two guysended up getting killed.

Thats about all I remember...

Hmm....as interesting as that movie is, I dont think that is the one.

I remember the main guy had a distinctive hat...not the slicked up hair.

I recall that there was a good amount of blood...which for a cartoon was strange.

The leaders face kind of reminded me of Mok from Rock and Rule...angular features..

Was it Teen Wolf by any chance? That's the only 80s film I remember.

Nope..definitely not that one.

I also seem to recall them being on motorcyles..thus the goggles often worn.

A google search for cartoon bikers with red jackets also comes up with Megazone 23 - which looks interesting enough that I might seek it out.

I give up, Akira was my best guess too.
80's was in my teens so that would have been the time I was most "aware" of what cartoons were out there.
Yep, dug deeper than I ever wanted to.

It was definitely not Akira...I have seen that.

I very much remember the more likeable guy all bloody and dying in his friends arms...the guy yelling about it...

Hells bells I was at most 10 when I saw it....so no wonder my memory of it isnt great :-P

Squatting with the squigs

Could it be Vampire Hunter D? Been a while since I watched it but seems to match , old feel (they have a steamtrain tank thing), bikes (i think the girl rides a bike), blood, people dying , red jackets i think on the two brothers (i think red vest with blue arms- not sure on that one)
I dunno if the cartoon was out in the 80's, but if it isn't vampire hunter d , watch vampire hunter d.
