I'm going to be GMing an only war campaign soon and want the first part to be based off of trench warfare. I want the feel of the campaign to be gritty rather than heroic, and all of the players will be playing regular guardsmen, most likely with a sergeant and one specialist. Any ideas for making this interesting while keeping the feel of it just being your regular guard squad in endless, hopeless combat? Thanks for the help!

Maybe set the scene. Basically make them picture something like WW1 at it's worst, make them picture the landscape as blasted apart, make the trenches muddy and wet. Make them picture tons of bodies beyond the trench line. Maybe have them be under artillery fire, with the knowledge that after the barrage ceases that the enemy WILL be coming enmasse.

Happy to help. I've found that in many RPG's that setting the scene and making your players vividly picture the scene makes it so much for fun.

On a slightly different note, what enemy do you think would be best for a campaign like this? I've considered tau but I can't imagine they would do many charges across no mans land

The Severan Dominate would be a good choice.

Read the old BL book 15 Hours. It will give you a feel. The enemy were Orks. However, it might be cooler if they were simply renegades (Not Chaos, just renegade) Guardsmen. Then, you could set them up in a bit of a moral dilemma if the ideology of the enemy is less crazy than that of the Imperium.

What type of adventures are they going to have in such a setting?

If you're going for a hopeless battle (at least at first) then an enemy like orks or renegades would be best I feel. Orks just keep coming and the knowledge of what the Renegades will do to you if they capture you is enough to scare the crap out of anyone.
