I was just wondering, with formations ( e.g Destroyer Cult) to get the formation bonuses do i have to take the big thing ( E.g Decurion detachment)

Thanks

No, you can take the formation by itself, but then it won't get the command benefits from the decurion. If you take it alongside a combined arms detachment, you get the command benefits for the formation on the models within it, but it doesn't count as part of a decurion unless you include it in one for its command benefits.

In short, no, you can take a destroyer cult by itself and gain the destroyer cult benefits for those models.

Whenever you see a rule page with the three skulls symbol at it you are looking at a formation. ( It also says formation on the page). Formations are detachments on their own and you can take any number of detachments in your army. All models in the formation but only the models in the formation get the bonuses of the formation.

Those mega detachments (like decurions) are detachments build of bricks that can containing all sorts of things.
Some just happen to be a formation, some are units, some of them are a named groups of models that are not a formation. These non formation groups can not be taken outside the mega detachment in that configuration.

So when in doubt look for an actual page that contains the formation with the name and the symbol for formation on it.

For example:
-Decurion is a Detachment.
-Star-God is the name of a part of the Decurion detachment, that can contain some specific units. But there is no Formation named Star-God. So this part of the decurion detachment can not be taken as a separate formation.
-Canptek Harvest can be part of the decurion detachment and it is also a seperate formation since there is page describing the canoptek harvest formation.
