I have a question as I may be delving into SoBH after hearing what's mostly overwhelming praise, because I need a good non-mass fantasy skirmish game to spice things up

Am I understanding it right that the Fightin' Fungi ruleset is basically everything from Song of Blades and Heroes, but with additional magic mechanics and more special abilities, plus lots of pics of the fungus miniatures made for the setting instead of more standard fantasy fare? I think I also read it also has rules for character creation instead of all of Song's example profiles?

I can get both from Amazon as deadtree editions, and would rather get the absolute most I can get out of the main rules mechanics (meaning everything but the other couple of Song books that add rules for extra terrain, campaigns, etc-those would be left for later.)

I can easily ignore pics of non-standard fantasy setting stuff, if that's all it is.

Thanks for any help.

Honestly, waiting on the new "Advanced SoBH" which is due very, very shortly is the best of both worlds.

Owning Fighting Fungi isn't a horrible idea as it technically already uses the Advanced rules, and will add more spells and skills balanced to be used alongside ASoBH.

I was going on the thought that I heard something about how Advanced SoBH was mostly Fightin' Fungi rethemed back to standard fantasy?

Not at all... or well... kind of.

Song of Blade and Heroes games always build on themselves. Fighting Fungi has... oh, 30 special rules with points costs you can use to build characters/monsters/etc...

Advanced Song will have another say... 80... but they will be different.

So yes, you can just buy Fighting Fungi, but you will only have a small tool-box of skills to build from, whereas Advanced Song will be the new core book, retroactively making Fighting Fungi an expansion.

I hope that makes sense. :-p

Also, and this is subjective... I find the whole idea behind Fighting Fungi stupid as hell. :-p SoBH has never quite had the most astounding art, etc... so adding a terrible theme over top made for a book I tolerate owning only because i'll end up repurposing many of its spells/skills for real ASoBH.

Yeah, I was only going to use it for mechanics, too. My games will be traditional fantasy fare. Was just wondering if I were to buy either of the two right now, would give me "more".

Edit:

I figure for anone reading this thread that is not much in the know (like I am/was). I actually just found this comparison of the basic vs. Advanced rules which was pretty informative:

Was thinking of finally getting around to getting into SoBaH, and I'm still a bit confused about the state of the various rulesets, and maybe because I rambled a bit when I asked earlier.

Basically, does the rulebook for Fightin' Fungi contain all of the rules from the Song of Blades and Heroes Revised rulebook? Even if it's to tide me over for a couple of months, I want access to the expanded magic spells and the extra weapon-styled skills/traits contained in FF, but I don't want to miss out on anything from the Revised rulebook, so I need to know if I'd have to buy both. I don;t mind that new traits will show up in the Advanced rules, as I will eventually get those if what's out now gets me interested.

Obviously I know that eventually I will want to get Song of Gold and Darkness for campaigns, and Song of Wind and Water for terrain expansions, but I am going to start at the beginning for awhile.
