I'm trying to build a guard army that at least has chance against the higher end lists. I don't expect to beat a competitive eldar or necron list but most of opponents are space marines and chaos so I think a decent chance against those with the right list. I want to run an armored list, what sort of units should I include?

Right now I have:
Tank commander (Pask) punisher with HB sponsons and lascannon
2x melta vet squads in chimera

I need a buddy for Pask and I've heard an Exterminator is good. A lot of the SM players in my area run multiple drop pods so maybe an infantry platoon for bubble wrapping? Also was thinking of a wyvern battery (duh) and 2 demolishers because I love them.

Are there other IG auto-includes? Thanks

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

I run a platoon with Coteaz that shuts down drop pods pretty nicely.

As for a Pask pal, if marines are really so common you could do an Executioner. It doesn't blow itself up with preferred enemy.

You could do a new Guard Formation army if you want an armored Core. You need a CCS, three LR's and a tank commander team plus a Techpriest. Since that gets you BS4 the Russes can be exterminators.

If you like Hellhounds, you could build towards:

New Battlegroup Formation:

Command:
CCS

Core: tank formation
Tank Commander Squad
3 LR squadrons
Techpriest

Aux: Veteran Formation
3x meltavet squads
CCS
Hellhound

Aux: Infantry Platoon

Aux: Vendetta/Valkyrie Formation

Question from a none IG player - The new formations... where it calls for "1 Tank Commander"

Does this mean just the commander, or do you still have to take the second russ to complete his squad?

Tank commander requires at least one buddy.

I was the TO for the event the author above is writing about, and this is by far the most potent IG list I have seen in a while. You don't have to copy it verbatim but that gives you the gist of what to build towards.
