Demi Company or Betrayal at Calth box?
Which one is better and why? Value-wise and Army building.
What about purchasing both?

Demi Company is more expensive, gives you jetpack marines and a Devastator squad (but with mixed weapons so its useless)
Betrayal at Calth gives you a much cooler Dreadnought (imo), overall neater marine models (also subjective), some Terminator models and a whole game by itself, to play with a friend when you're not feeling up for a big 40k game.
I think you get a total of 4 more models in the Demi Company box, and you pay $70 more for it.
I would personally go for Betrayal at Calth any day of the week, even purchasing two BaC sets over one of each.

It really depends on what you plan to do with them. A Demi-Company comes with the same number of Tactical Marines (with more options), a Dreadnought (not a Contemptor, but with a good amount of options), a customizable Captain (as opposed to a monopose like the BaC boxed set) and the missing Devastator and Assault Squads needed to make a Battle Demi-Company for a Gladius Strike Force. With all of the options in the different units included, you can pretty much give your Captain any option listed for choices (except the Power Lance and Power Maul), so take that for what you will.
The Battle of Calth boxed set has the same number of Tacticals, two monopose Captains (one in Terminator armor, the other in Power armor), a Contemptor Dreadnought (with only two weapon options and no ability to make the Contemptor Mortis), and five Terminators. So you are trading versatility and better capability to fit the Gladius Strike Force for a lower price and some cooler models (Cataphractii and Contemptors FTW).
If I were to be starting a new army from scratch, I would actually go with the Battle Demi-Company boxed set, since I bought all of the models in it separately at one point or another.

Okay thanks guys!
I ended up saving some money on a Demi Company box set and I purchased a squad of Centurion devastators too!

They are both good boxes, but if I was starting over, I’d go with the demi co.
More weapon options. You get grav guns, and all the non-HB/ML heavies.
More variety. The Mk. IV is cool. I just finished putting together 20 of the guys. But it gets very same-y fast. I like the fact that the new tac kits has all sorts of marks in it.
The comtemptor dread is fun, but static. I also prefer the angry washing machine over tubby personally, but that’s very subjective.
I use assault marines more then terminators. And not just because the demi-co forces me to. While the BaC box termis do have a lot of options, they don’t have some that I like, due to being designed for 30k. AsC and TH/SS being the issue.
The BaC HQs are very cool. Not fond of the wargear they gave them though. It’s not impossible to change, but does take some work. Much prefer the build-your-own option. Also very glad GW is not taking this opportunity to cram the mono-pose c-grav captain down our throughs (jacking the price up another 20ish bucks for the “privilege”) On the topic of HQs with bad gear...
