So like a million and one other little lost sheep I'm returning to the GW flock after several years and 2 editions absence to have a crack at 30k with the Betrayal at Calth set. I'm set on a Legion with the Iron Warriors as I like the fluff, like the colours(mostly, can't be doing with hazard stripes.),and I like the rules so thats three importants boxs ticked for starting a new project. I've grabbed Calth another 15 Cataphractii and a second hand Perturabo. Other than the 2 red books when they are back in print is there any real must haves for a good 30k starter force?

They made a new board on the forum to talk about it, might get better responses here.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Ahh the missile puking legion. I wont get into the primarchs and LoWs. Just note no LOW under 2k points. There are a variety of Rite of War to choose from. Orbital Assault(drop pods), Pride of the Legion(vets and terminators are troops), Armored Spearhead(rhinos and land raiders), Decent of Angels(name might be wrong, but all aircraft and jump packers). IWs individual Row kinda sucks.

There are two named characters if you go that route that can determine the theme of your army. Golg is a traitor captain that makes terminators troops. Pride of the Legion RoW allows Tyrants to be troops as well, good since they are expensive, but awesome. An entire unit of terminators who can split fire and have cyclone missile launchers.

Alternately the Loyalist HQ guy Khyr is more of what you would imagine IW to be. A siege warfare guy. Get a bastion he buffs it and throw a Havok unit in there with an ammo supply that he also provides and vomit more missiles(I use missile launchers) . Other than that he makes for a good general HQ.

Special abilities, the Legion provides a rare immunity to panic from shooting attacks. Pretty useful when marines lack ATSKNF. I dont even give mine Vexillas because of this. The rest of their rules arent that special. Til the end gets a bad rap but I have never had it bite me.

So essentially if you want a footslogger list, 2 units of 20 with an elite slot apothecary in each(3 per slot). Pick up some cyclone missile launchers from a 3rd party and build 10 Tyrant Terminators.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

I was thinking of going Pride of the Legion with the whole turn 1 reserves/deepstriking terminators combo thanks to Perturabo for bigger games. Then for smaller games going with Kyr Vhalen, still pride but more shooting focus and a nice AV15 bunker to chill out in.

I think Tyrants are an auto include unless you are playing 500 points. If you go Perturabo then yeah turn one DSing is pretty nice. Otherwise I would never not start Tyrants on the board. The rest of them can go in transports.

Don't disregard Vets. They are one of the best bread and butter units of any legion. Drive 10 up in a rhino get out next to an enemy unit and hit them with 2 heavy flamers, 8 bolters rapid firing and Sniper. The heavy bolter version works too at range. Plus they come with 2 CCWs already stock and have the option for all of them to have melta bombs.

I have one army of each, an all termy Golg army, and a general infantry army with no named character. It has 2 blob squads, 2 rhino'd vet squads, a big Tyrant squad led by a siege breaker HQ and various fire support vehicles. Never been a fan of castling up as I like the movement game and the IW do the slow plodding march up the field better than the Death Guard.
