So looking to get some Mechanicum in the next few weeks as fancy dipping my hand in at 30K and not a massive fan of marines in 40K, but then I play Nids and Crons so guess I like robots.

So there are a good few options for Mechanicum, I have already got the red book and looking through the units, and looking at some lists on the internet but happy to hear suggestions from people here.

In terms of my local meta eg my gaming mates on the 30K side one guy has world eaters or bearers cant remember which but the chaos ones, then 40k side is eldar, tau, marines mostly SW some BA

Myrmidon destructors with irradiation engines when fighting eldar? relentless, AP3, fleshbane, torrent, flamer templates in a triaros is nasty.

If stompy robots are your thing then legio cybernetica may be the way for you? MC's as troops with magos dominus' in a squad with them is quite compelling and an idea i'm considering having a go with.

I will have a look at Legio Cybernetica, but talking to my mate who has world bearers, he mentioned Dark Mechanicum, so looks like I am going to go that route, I know nothing offical from FW yet, but it is in the lore, so will just use the same units, plus means get to be battle brothers with him, also means the Cytan I have on the shelf wont be wasted lol

Now to decide on a colour scheme

Nothing official? There are already two Traitor faction Special Characters.

Yeah, draycavac can only be taken by a traitor faction and Inmar satarael's unit entry says he sided with horus too.

So after reading the book and what models I like the look of thinking about this little lot

2 x Mechanicum Thanatar Siege-Automata
2 x Mechanicum Castellax Battle-Automata with Darkfire Cannon
2 x Mechanicum Castellax Battle-Automata
4 x Mechanicum Thallax Cohort with Photon Thruster [2 normal, 1 with photon]
1 x Mechanicum Magos Dominus with Rad-Cleanser

Comes to around 1850 points or so, only 19 models so should be paintable in a sensible amount of time lol

By official I meant no rules for Dark Mechanicum fielding the units posted above.

Thoughts?

Having only one scoring unit is going to hurt a lot.

You're playing a legio cybernetica list, yes? (i can't tell, but that makes more sense given your unit choices)

If so you'll have no problem with claiming objectives - my advice would be to swap out the photon thrusters on the thallax for multi-meltas or phased plasma fusils.
The darkfire cannon is the most useful photon weapon because it can do better than a glancing hit on a 6 against AV12 - bit of a waste of the 'lance' rule i recon.

If power armour marines are the general fodder then the salvo 2/3 S6 AP3 phased plasma fusil is the only way - if you expect to see terminators the photon thruster is okay, but a bit of a liability with 'gets hot!' so i like the cheaper and safer multi-melta - it's also better at cracking tanks.

As of the new Redbook, no unit with the Cybernetica Cortex rule can score.

But if you just murder everything that's fine too.

Wow, well spotted! Puts the ol' legio cybernetica at a bit of a disadvantage, i recon.

If the photon thrusters were changed for two phased plasma fusils and two multi-meltas, there would be enough points to get a tarantula hyperios platform.

Maybe i'm just a bit sour toward the 'gets hot!' rule.

Photon thrusters really aren't a good choice for Thallax unless you really need the AP2. It doesn't synergize well with the lightning guns because of the range difference. Plasma for infantry hunting squads, melta for tank hunting squads.

Thanks for your input, will have a look at the book tonight, and tweak the list a little

Somewhere in the dark...

With so much armoured ceramite around though, are multi meltas really that good?

IMO, if you are playing against other HH forces, not worth the points. Against 40k forces, it can be worth the points.

Melta is still S8 and AP1, so even without the benefit of the melta rule, it's still highly effective against armor values less than 13.

I actually like the photon thrusters. In the last game I played, they definitely earned their points. The range difference isn't that big of a deal if you're using them with that in mind. Also, they're good at holding back field objectives because they can still threaten anything on the table.
