Hello everyone! With WHFB dead and gone, I've jumped head first into the Kings of War 2e scene right in time to nab myself the new Uncharted Empires book. Perfect timing, it would seem, since I played Warriors of Chaos!

Now, since the Mantic Forums is in the middle of a gigantic seizure that renders it completely inaccessible that's lasted for nearly a month and doesn't seem to be ending any time soon, I'm here at the good old DakkaDakka to ask for a little help and advice! I've yet to actually get to play at all, as I just moved to a new home out of state in the middle of the holidays, and only just got my KoW books in the mail right before Xmas, but I have spent a lot of time researching and watching battle reports, so I think I'm pretty good on the rules. My main issue is my collection of miniatures, and how to properly get them to fit alongside other Mantic armies.

The primary concern is base size. Unlike Warriors of Chaos, the Varangur are actually more 20x20mm than 25x25. This means that every single model I own that I don't run as a Son of Korgaan, Cursed Son, Champion, or horse-rider is bigger than it should be. And it's not like I can really go about ripping the 25x25 bases off my sorcerers and standard bearers to squeeze them on itty bitty 20x20 bases, either. What's even worse is that I have two chariots and a warshrine on those huge 100x50 bases, and the Varangur don't even have chariots! Not to mention my Hellcannon that's mounted on a truly massive 100x150 base, when war-machines are supposed to be on measly 50x50's. Now, I'm well aware of the 'unusual base size' rule, but I kinda feel this might be /too/ much. Granted, bigger footprints are more of a disadvantage than anything, so it's not like I'd be considered cheating, but it's still something I'm worried about.

My second concern involves the aforementioned lack of chariots and other such things. I could probably say my Hellcannon is the focus for a Magus Conclave, but it's just so gorram huge, and the way the resin model is set up, I couldn't really fit it on a much smaller base either. (I could also say it's one of those Abyssal Dwarf cannons and take it as an allied unit, which would fit the original Hellcannon theme nicely, but the base issue is still there). I still need to find out what to do with my warshrine and chariots, and what to count my Daemon Prince as. All my Warriors and Knights and Sorcerers and other Heroes are pretty much fine, with the exception of the Sorcerers being on bigger bases than they're supposed to be (I need to put them on the Magus Diet, apparently). Also, most of my mounted heroes are on 50x50 Monster Bases because otherwise they couldn't fit in the ranks of their troops in WHFB. Though, that might work out for my Tzeentch Lord on a Disc, which will probably pretend it's a Chimera for the flying breath-attack monster mount just fine.

So to summarize, my issue are:

1: Most of my models are too big.

2: WTF do I do with my chariots and warshrine?

Thanks in advance from a new KoW player who's super excited to get her first game in soon!

For 2), I would recommend using 3 chariots/shrines to represent a horde of Direfang Riders. The footprint would be correct (150mmx100mm), the unit type would be correct (Large Cavalry) and the stats are close enough.

That's actually a pretty good idea! I hadn't thought of that. Though the warshrine doesn't quite fit, I could use some kind of unit-filler in between the two chariots.

I actually got the bright idea to use my warshrine as a Devourer. I've got mine all floaty and Tzeentchy, instead of being carried by the giant mutant things. That could be a good fit for its Nimble and Stealthy stats, and the Breath Weapon option could be the mage on top casting fire spells or something. It loses its 'magical support buff engine' status from WHFB but becomes my big scary monster instead.

I also found out that my 'Exalted Hero on a Daemonic Mount' is actually just the right size to be a 'Chieftain on a Direfang', so that works out too.

In regards to 1 - As long as the total footprint of the unit is right, it really does not matter too much what the size of the figures is.

So, you can either put as many figures on a properly sized movement tray as will fit, or you can make a unit base - gluing the figures directly to the movement tray.

This latter also allows you to do up units as small dioramas, or at least as a thematic whole. (For undead, I have seen a unit of ghouls leapfrogging over tombstones and a regiment of skeletons that were sitting down in a cemetery, enjoying a nosh of sandwiches as a break from digging up graves.)

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Given that 5x20mm =100mm and that 4x25mm also =100mm all you have to do is run 4 wide instead of 5 wide with your warriors. KoW only cares about unit footprints, not individual models.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.
