So I am thinking about getting into 30k because my local games workshop manager is finally allowing 30k to be played in-store now that betrayl at calth is being sold. I really like the Death Guard models and color schemes but I want to know the rules for everything before I buy. I noticed the red books on Forge World are now sold out. Which books should I buy to get started? PS: I have heard there are going to be new books out soon, i am in no rush to get started, should i just wait?

Welcome to 30k!

There are two paths to go with the books.

1. Black Books.
PROs: Large, Beautiful display pieces, lots of background info, lots of nice art, scenarios, campaign ideas
CONs: Large (hard to carry around), usually need 2-3 to play a full legion list, some units have been updated in the revised Red Books (see below)

2. Red Books.
PROs: Portable sized (roughly codex sized), 1-2 small books for a full legion list, most up-to-date rules, much cheaper than black books
CONs: currently sold out, no background, no art/pictures

If you just want to play, or want to play competitively, wait until they reprint the red book sets and buy those.

For DeathGuard, you will need the Legion Astartes book and the Istvaan Legions book.

Good Luck and have fun!

The new red books are due out in march. If you're gunning to play you might be able to limp along for a few months using battlescribe to build your lists, though you will not have access to the rules for most stuff so hop on the new red books when they hit the market.

Feel free to ask me questions if you have them.
