I play
TTS a TON with friends lately. We use it for Shadowrun Crossfire, Shadows of Brimstone, XIA: Legends of a Drift System and a few other games. I own all the games but when my friends are hours away, getting together in person to play is considerably more difficult. It's also great for campaign games like Shadows of Brimstone or Shadowrun Crossfire, since you can save the state of the game (cards, tokens, upgrades, etc.).
I haven't played D&D or
40k/X-Wing over
TTS yet. I've previously used Vassal for
40k and X-Wing, and used Google Hangouts for D&D/
SW EotE. I could see using
TTS for either, but it lacks the functionality of something like Roll20.net for long term
RPG campaigning.

To be clear, for
40k it doesn't actually handle rules or rolls at all. It simply provides you with a table and to-scale figures to be moved around the sandbox physics engine. You can also get terrain and templates and such. But handling of rules and stuff is still handled person to person.
