I'm currently working on painting the Ultramarine's Primarch. Today I got a chance to pick up BoC at a good price. I reckon I'll paint them all up to match the big guy. Now here's my request; I doubt I'll ever paint enough to play 30k properly and I don't have the money right now to pick up the red books, but I like, when I'm putting my models together for painting to keep them game legal. Could any of you post up a 30k legal way of assembling my force? I know what I'm doing with the dreadnaught, but the rest is undecided. I'd love to know how many standard marines/ special weapons should be in a unit and so forth.

As I say, I don't care about points or rules. But an idea of a more or less sensible list to construct would be a great help.

Thanks.

Slight change of question here. A guy gave me an army list that I'm good to go with. The marines have to be veterans instead of tacs to make the list work. Is there a difference in paint schemes for veterans?

The only real difference might be a white stripe on the helmet, but aside from that, there's not much. Just bear in mind that Pre-Heresy UM Sergeants DON'T have red helmets. The red helms mark them for Censure instead.

They/them

According to Forge World a white stripe denotes sergeant.

This is the veteran scheme according to the unit card in Betrayal at Calth:

The only difference really is bling, but GW has completely ignored it with the models and just paint them identically to non-Veteran Tacticals.

Thanks. I knew to avoid the red helmets, didn't know about the white stripes. But I do like their second album.
