Anyone here ever paint Celestial Lions? I think the color scheme is interesting. What tips or advice do you have for painting the color scheme and gold in general?

I worked out a good scheme with a gw store employee, but didn't write it down. I'm currently trying to 'rediscover' it.

What I can tell you is that the base consisted of retributor armour, followed by seraphim sepia in the armour grooves.

The next steps are what I'm hazy on, but I think it went like this:

Layer 50/50 retributor armour and liberator gold.

Line highlight with pure liberator gold.

Sparing picked out highlights with runefang steel

Fortunately I have some old marines from when I started out in 40k so I have plenty of rest subjects. Pardon the obvious sloppiness.

That looks pretty cool! Try to add some definition to the blue, maybe a highlight or two?

Yeah, the blue is actually pretty sloppy on the prototypes.

I actually painted a squad (sans the heads) after these prototypes with much crisper results. Haven't taken a picture though.

The problem now is I'm working on a celestial lions dreadnought conversion, hence the need to rediscover the recipe. (And write it down this time.)

So the dreadnought is finished and what I ended up doing for the gold layers was a watered down 1:2 retributor:liberator mix which I followed with a 1:3 because it looked to orange at first.

I'm satisfied with the results and will have to test the different mixes on a couple more sacrificial marines before I decide on which one going forward.

haven't done those and haven't used retributor armour =/ but the gold I've done I do like this

medium to light brown undercoat - zandri dust is good too
whatever gold you're using - I like vallejo old gold myself
sepia wash over top
highlight with vallejo gold (much brighter gold)
sometimes I'll do silver as an extreme highlight but also most of the time I'm doing jewelry type items so I think it goes better with those.

And basically if you want to make nice transitions, do multiple layers per highlight etc I do tend to use my 'nicer' products with the metals, like the actual acrylic thinner and flow aids because it helps more with metallics, other stuff I just use water
