Subject: 1500 pts Grey Knights with Eldar allies versus Farsight Bomb.
I just had a competitive game with one Tau player who was running the new Codex. I was dreaded at first because I know about their reputation so far and I forgot to bring my super list containing a Librarius Deathstar of my own. I actually had another game with a guy playing Orks but he whined that he had nothing against me after I killed his Warboss and a lot of other dudes on turn 1 (they surged forward in his turn, and I charged them in mine). I was looking for someone with a more beefy list so that the game would not end on 2 turns and I found this guy. I might have gotten more than what I had bargained for.
I consider the Tau to be very powerful with their formations, but my list isn't anything to sneeze at either.
So here is how it goes.
My army:
Grey Knights Nemesis Strike Force:
Librarian - Combi-melta, ML3 (LT).
5 x Terminators - Incinerator (LT).
Dreadknights Warlord - Heavy Incinerators, Gatling Psylencer, Teleporter and Great Sword (DW).
Dreadknights - Heavy Incinerators, Gatling Psylencer, Teleporter and Great Sword (D).
5 x Interceptors - Incinerator (T).
Eldar allies:
Farseer (FDF).
5 x Dire Avengers (DA).
Wave Serpent - TL Scatter Laser and Shuriken Cannon (W).
5 x Dark Reapers - Krak Missiles and Exarch (DR).
5 x Fire Dragons (FDF).
My opponent's army:
Infiltration Cadre:
10 x Pathfinders (P1).
10 x Pathfinders (P2).
10 x Pathfinders (P3).
3 x Stealth Suits - Fusion Blaster (SS1).
3 x Stealth Suits - Fusion Blaster (SS2).
Piranha - Fusion Blaster (PS).
Drone Net VX1-0:
4 x Drones (D1).
4 x Drones (D2).
4 x Drones (D3).
4 x Drones (D1). (I screwed up on this unit here. They were insignificant throughout the battle that I had no idea where they were or what they did).
Mont'Ka Contingent Headquarters:
Farsight (F).
8 x Crisis Suits - plethora of weapons, Shas'vre with Fearless (F).
Retaliation Cadre:
Commander - Iridium Armor, whatever that if he does not fire, everyone gets Twin-linked (F).
2 x Crisis Suits - 2 Fusion Blasters and 2 Plasma Rifles (CS1).
2 x Crisis Suits - 2 Plasma Rifles and 2 Burst Cannons (CS2).
2 x Crisis Suits - 2 Plasma Rifles and 2 Burst Cannons (Cs).
Riptide - Twin-linked Plasma Rifle, Ion Accelerator and Earth Caste pilot (R).
2 Broadsides - Railgun (B).
Anyway, let's start with the game. Purge the Alien. Standard board-edge deployment.
My Warlord is the Dreadknight and his Trait is that if he kills anything in challenge, I get 1 VP.
Farsight has his unique Trait, which prevents his army from scattering when entering the board.
Psychic Powers:
Librarian - Invisibility, Terrify, Mental Fortitude and Psychic Shriek.
Farseer - Cleansing Flames, Gate of Infinity, Banishment and Purge Soul.
Deployment:
(More details to come)

- All unit positions are after Jetpack Thrust but before Consolidation.
- Skull represents a model dying. Boom indicates a wound is taken and Big Boom is used where the whole unit is destroyed.
- Guess what the Big Skull mean.
Deployment:
The Pinraha scouted forward. The Infiltration Cadre and Drone Formation are on the board (I forgot to put another unit of Drones, but this did not matter game-wise) and the rest are in Reserve waiting for Deep Strike.
All of my army are on board. There is no point Deep Striking only to be retaliated immediately. I want those Warp Charges on the table.
Tau had first turn and I failed to seize.
Turn 1 Tau:
Spoiler:
Most of his army stayed put. The Piranha moved into the face of the Wave Serpent.
Shooting saw 11 Marker Lights into my Wave Serpent (W), causing 3 Seeking Missiles which I successfully jinked all 3 of them.
The Piranha (P) shot its Fusion Blaster at BS10 with Ignore Cover into the Wave Serpent and Immobilized it. I failed the Serpent Shield roll.
Turn 1 Alliance:
Spoiler:
Interceptors (T) shunted forward to engage the Drones. Both Dreadknights (D and DW) moved up to engage the foe. The rest of the army stayed put.
Psychic Phase was horrendous. I got Gate of Infinity on the Farseer and Fire Dragons (FDF), but they mishap and was placed at the left edge of my board. Invisibility on the Dreadknight failed. Terrify did not do anything to the Stealth Suits (SS2) and Psychic Shriek killed 2 Pathfinders (P3).
Shooting Phase was more eventful. Between the Heavy Incinerator and Gatling Psylencer of the Dreadknight (D), the Pathfinders (P2) were utterly wiped out. Librarian and Terminators killed the Pirana (PS) with Incinerator and Krak Grenade. Interceptors took out the Drones (D1). Scatter Laser from the Wave Serpent (W) Snap-fired and killed 2 more Pathfinders (P3).
Dreadknight Warlord (DW) charged into the Pathfinders (P1). Hammer of Wrath killed one. I used my one attack and failed to do anything. My opponent's attacks were useless. However, the Pathfinders failed their Morale and were run down by the monstrous Dreadknight who then consolidated behind the square building.
Turn 2 Tau:
Spoiler:
Because I wiped out numerous units from the Infiltration Cadre, all his Reserved army came in. This was going hurt.
Farsight Bomb (F) and the Broadsides (B) appeared next to by board edge while the rest of the suits (Cs, CS1, CS2, R) landed in the middle of the board. All the positions are after the Jetpacks were used, except Farsight (F) who are put in their original spot.
Shooting was brutal. The Interceptors (T) were wiped out by fire from Crisis Suits (CS1 and CS2) and Stealth Suits (SS2). 3 Marker Light was put on the Wave Serpent (W) but the Seeker Missile failed to penetrate. The Riptide (R) fired the overcharged Ion Accelerator at it and I mistakenly Jinked despite the Wave Serpent being Immobilized. It makes little difference as the Shield was still on, so it would likely to live until the Farsight Bomb dumped 5 Fusion Blasters into it, blowing it sky high. The explosion killed 1 Terminator, 2 Dire Avengers (who made both Pinning and Morales checks) and put 1 wound on his Commander. The Farsight Bomb then opened up on the Terminators and Librarian, completely mowing them down with just the Plasma Rifles.
Broadsides (B) failed to do anything to the Dark Reapers (DR) and a lot of shots from many units only inflicted 1 wound on my Dreadknight (D).
The Farsight Bomb launched backwards and this was where he made a huge tactical error by putting them close to my Dreadknight Warlord (DW).
Turn 2 Alliance:
Spoiler:
Dreadknight (D) moved back to protect my home area. His Warlord brother (DW) approached the Farsight Bomb (F) with vindictive rage. Farseer and Fire Dragons (FDF) moved to the right so that they could be in range of the Farsight Bomb should they fail Gate of Infinity. Dire Avengers (DA) moved back to engage the Broadsides (B) alongside the Dreadknight. Dark Reapers re-positioned inside the building, poised to fire.
Psychic Phase was one again abysmal. Sanctuary on the Warlord failed. Gate of Infinity denied. Purge Soul did 1 wound to the Broadside.
Shooting Phase saw the Fire Dragons killing the Buffmander in the Farsight Bomb. Even with his 5+ cover saves and 5+ Feel No Pain (T5), he succumbed. Dark Reapers killed 3 more Crisis Suits from the Farsight Bomb.
My Warlord charged the Farsight Bomb. Overwatch put 1 wound on him but without the Buffmander, most AP2 and AP1 shots went wide. Farsight accepted the challenge and did another wound to the Dreadknight Warlord, only to get smashed to bits. Not even the finest melee combatant of the Tau Empire could withstand the might of the Dreadknight. The battered supreme commander was immediately carried away from battle as his bodyguards fought to the death to protect his journey. No other harm was caused on the Dreadknight. The Shas'vre in the unit was still Fearless, so they were locked in combat. The Big Skull now signifies the Farsight Bomb was now without its namesake.
The other Dreadknight, along with the Dire Avengers charged the Broadsides (the Dire Avengers should not be able to do so due to disembarking in previous turn). One Dire Avenger died to Overwatch. Together, they beat the Broadsides to crap.
Turn 3 Tau:
Spoiler:
Movement Phase was uneventful, and so was the Shooting Phase. The Dark Reapers (DA) made an absurd number of armor and cover saves, surviving with only the Exarch left. They were behind the behind walls, so the Pathfinders (P3) could no see them. In fact, all of my army is out of Line of Sight of the Pathfinders. Two Fire Dragons (FDF) were killed by the Crisis Suits (CS1).
In the assault, the Dreadknight Warlord (DW) killed 1 Crisis Suit (F), taking nothing in return.
Turn 3 Alliance:
Spoiler:
Not much movement went on this time. Dreadknight (D) and Dire Avengers shuffled up at the right flank to engage the encroaching foe.
Farseer FINALLY successfully cast Gate of Infinity and teleported the Fire Dragons into the thick of the battle. She then unleashed Cleansing Flames, torching both Pathfinders (P1) and Drones (D1).
Shooting Phase saw the Crisis Suits (CS2) melted by Fusion Guns (I forgot to put indication on them). Dark Reaper Exarch (DA) killed one from Crisis Suits (Cs). And Dire Avengers killed 1 Drone (D3).
In Assault, the Dreadknight (D) charged the remaining Crisis Suit (Cs) and killed him, but not before taking 1 wound from Overwatch. The Dire Avengers charged the Drones and it was a pillow fight as nobody was injured. One more Crisis Suit (F) went down from the Warlord Dreadknight who took 1 wound this time in return.
Turn 4 Tau:
Spoiler:
Very few significant movement this turn except the Drones (D2) kept sneaking into my home area.
Combined fire from the Crisis Suits (CS1), Riptide (R) and 2 Stealth Suits squads (SS1 and SS2) destroyed the Fire Dragons (FDF). However, using her trickery, the Farseer managed to whisk herself away in the nick of time. No other shooting was effective against either the Dark Reaper Exarch (DA) or the Dreadknight (D).
More pillow fight between the Dire Avengers and the Drones. Dreadknight Warlord (DW) killed 2 more Crisis Suits (F). Only the Fearless Shas'vre is left. Why were there so f***ing many of them?
Turn 4 Alliance:
Spoiler:
I forgot to remove where the Fire Dragons met their end. Dreadknight (D) launched forward to engage the Stealth Suits (SS1 and SS2). Everyone else stayed put, most of whom did not have a choice.
Dark Reaper Exarch killed both Crisis Suits (CS1).
The Dreadknight killed 1 Stealth Suit from each squad with his Heavy Incinerator and forced one squad (SS2) to flee. He charged the original target (SS1) and killed another with his Smash attack.
Dreadknight Warlord did nothing to the Shas'vre with his Smash attack but did not take any wound in retaliation. The Dire Avengers (DA) killed one Drone (D3) and overran them.
Turn 5 Tau:
Spoiler:
Stealth Suits (SS2) rallied. There was not much else for anyone to do at this point.
Dark Reaper Exarch (DR) Went to Ground and evaded the Riptide (R) Ion Accelerator. The Drones (D2) cut down the remaining Dire Avengers (DA).
Both Dreadknights (D and DW) finished off their enemies (SS1 and F, respectively) in close combat.
Turn 5 Alliance:
Spoiler:
Last turn. Warlord Dreadknight (DW) moved back to clear out my home area while the other Dreadknight (D) shunted into my opponent's deployment zone for Line Breaker.
The Heavy Incinerator made short work of the Drones (D2)
Result:
Spoiler:
Tau: 7 Kill Points (Farseer, Fire Dragons, Wave Serpent, Dire Avengers, Librarian, Terminators, Wave Serpent) - 7 VPs in total.
Alliance: 16 Kill Points (Pathfinders x 3, Crisis Suits x 4, Farsight, Commander, Drones teams x 4, Piranha, Stealth Suits, Broadsides), First Blood, Slay the Warlord, Line Breaker, 1 Bonus VP for the Dreadknight Warlord slaying Farsight in a challenge - 20 VPs in total.
VICTORY FOR THE ALLIANCE!
Tactical analysis:
Spoiler:
That was a really competitive game, except for a few mistakes here and there. They mostly would not have made a difference, but who know?
The Dreadknights were the MVP for me this game, killing so many enemies in both range and close combat. They were both alive with 1 wound left on each. The Dark Reaper Exarch knocked down a total of 5 Crisis Suits this entire game.
The Farsight Bomb is really nasty in shooting, but as soon as they get into close combat, things immediately fall apart. Ridiculously expensive and unable to dislodge even a single Dreadknight.
I hope you all enjoy this battle report. This is my first time using this format, so I am not very experienced. If there is any advice, please be sure to share with me.
I will have another game with another Tau player next Wednesday, and I hope to write the battle report after that. I will bring a more powerful list this time with Sevrin Loth leading the Librarius Conclave for 2++ and 2+ Harness the Warp when casting Invisibility.
Cheers.
