I'm looking to find rules and models to play games in Polish Campaign of World War 2. More specifically, I'm looking for the following things:
-Simple rules. Beer and pretzel style, balance is not as important as "feel" think convention demo games,
-Lower cost. I'd like to keep the model and rules cost down. I'm not afraid to pay for what I want, but this is a once or twice a year type game.
-Scale is open. smaller is likely better, and there seem to be pretty decent ranges for both 10mm and 15mm
-Ideally, we could play games on a kitchen table as opposed to a gaming store, but this isn't a deal breaker.

Obviously FOW is the go to for WW2 gaming, but I don't want to pay their prices and in my limited experience their rules are fairly complicated. In terms of rules, I know that there are low to no cost options out there, but I'd rather solicit some suggestions than dive in head first.

In my mind, the exact scenario I would like would be "based on the movie based on the war." We both like the idea of a (likely mostly dismounted) cavalry company fighting a panzergrenadier company. If you're gaming Fall Weiss you should have cavalry, motorcycle troops, and Panzer 35s.

For models, I was actually impressed at how deep a bench Old Glory has for Polish and German minis. With the OG army promotion, I can buy a lot of lead for not a lot of cash. I did look at Pithead, but their ordering system seems difficult, and I'm not sure how I feel about 10mm. I'm not sure the cost of shipping makes it substantially cheaper.

Any thoughts from the Dakka brain trust?

I would use Bolt action rules with 15mm flames of war or peter pig models.
Since you will be using flames of war models a blister or 2 will work for the fact that BA is a platoon level game and not company or regiment size like they are in FOW.
Also you can buy a PSc 15mm plastics for the german infantry and use Zvezda tank kits for the germans.

I love bolt action, and it is quick to pick up, but I think we're going to look more for company sized, multibased games.

Which works for me, is it means if I wanted to, I could reuse the stuff as FOW.

Also you need to be careful about the old Glory packs as you will usually need to buy 3. usually command weapon teams and riflemen are seperate and you will need bases. i did that before and ended up spending more money than if i had bought the FOW blisters.

Thinking about it, has anybody tried to adapt the BA rules for company scale, making each squad a platoon? So when you buy a rifle squad in BA, you use the models for a rifle platoon: command base, rifle bases, and an MMG base. In game, each base acts like a single model.

I think it could work reasonably well, aside from scaling the tanks. While a 10 base platoon would have the same firepower as a 10 man squad, how do you represent the firepower of a five tank platoon? One way is to simply keep all five tanks on the board until a vehicle destroyed result comes up, which seems overly abstract, but could work in a highly simplified rule set.

Forged In Battle 15mm Miniatures are well worth checking out. Well sculpted with hardly any cleanup required and very reasonably priced. I've not bought any of their Polish miniatures but the range is fairly comprenhensive and I've bought plenty of their other ranges and love them.

"And if we've learnt anything over the past 1000 mile retreat it's that Russian agriculture is in dire need of mechanisation!"
