So I just saw this movie and here are my thoughts on it (in spoilers).

Here was my only real issue with the movie that I could see.

Spoiler:
Ok so Leonardo dicaprio's character nearly dies from a bear attack and gets left behind by his hunting team. Basically they leave behind his son (half pawnee indian apparently), some young guy and a guy that has done nothing but insult him and his son the whole time and seems to have it out for him. I can't entirely fault anybody since he allowed people to offer to stay behind for cash to help out this guy but the untrustworthy guy wanted to as well and the captain didn't find this suspect at all. Basically partway through one guy goes to get water while the untrustworthy guy tries to 'speed' things along by killing di caprio whose son intervenes and gets stabbed to death. The untrustworthy guy makes it far along before they find him out btw.

So lesson learned don't entrust somebody's life with somebody that dislikes you and seems to have it out for you with only weaker people to fend that person off.

The other things I learned about the groups in the movie are as follows:

Spoiler:
The first group of native americans are sort of aggressive but misunderstood and also somewhat jerks (stealing furs and killing americans). The French at first seem about average (only part I remember is one French guy wanting a woman with big breasts to which I can say I want that too buddy but consensually so in other words it wouldn't happen :_() but turn into evil rapist bad guys later on that basically have the girl the first group of native americans are trying to find (who is stolen by the French and forced into being a sex slave). Another thing I learned is that if you've lost everything and find a friend (native American that lost everything to the Sioux Indians) then chances are your thin remaining hope and friendship will be dashed by some jerks (in this case French killing and hanging him for being a native American). If you see baby bears playing nearby then get outta there because the mama bear will destroy your stupid ***.

One of the bigger lessons learned from this movie is being left behind for dead in a hostile wilderness with people trying to kill you sucks so very badly.

The most important lesson though is don't ever trust your life to somebody that is probably doing it for a quick buck and could conceivably kill you just to collect a quick payday. In fact question the sanity of anybody that would allow somebody of questionable integrity to do this.

That's what happens when you make a "let's win an Oscar" biography using a relatively unknown individual and well-documented historical events. Kind of like Braveheart. There's a laundry list of significant things either left out or added in to make the movie an Oscar vehicle. Same here. You can start with Hugh Glass didn't have a son on the expedition, and it goes on from there. So a lot of those things you mentioned were changed or added to the Glass story to make the movie an Oscar vehicle for DiCaprio.
