Hi everyone, I'm a returning player and would like to get back into the hobby quickly and easily. However, I have run into a few predicaments. 1.) My army of choice is CSM, and, if I have read correctly in this forum, they are not doing so well in the current meta. 2.) As a high school senior I am very low on cash and time. 3.) There's been 2 new rule book releases since I left so I am hopefully unaware of major rule changes.

I think I have ways to deal with these however I would like some input as well. For 1, I've looked at some lists here and found that you can take FW and different armies along with a CSM main force. So I can take some daemons or FW tanks with a CSM main army. However collecting an army that can accommodate for the extra units would be expensive, so, 2, I will paint my CSM as black legion to save on time and money. In addition I can use the Black Legion codex (or whatever the special book is) but I'm not sure if it's good. For 3, I think I will invest in Dark Vengeance to help get back into the game and collect a small force quickly, easily, and cheaply.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated. I would especially like advice on small size CSM armies, in the 500-1000 point range that are decently competitive but still fun to play. Any advice on paints (brands, brushes, airbrushes, etc) would also be appreciated. Never had a fully painted army before. Also, methods of transportation would be nice; I tossed my old case, unfortunately.

Thank you, and I hope to be good friends with you all

Hi.

Welcome to Dakka

I think your looking in the right direction to build your army inexpensively. The models in Dark Vengeance are gorgeous (and cheap). I like to use the chosen from that set as the aspiring champion for my chaos marine squads. You could even use the DA in the set as "fallen" Dark Angels.

Chaos Space Marines are not a top army, your right, and I have no idea what the group you intend to play against is like BUT,,, in my opinion there has been a lot of fun come out for Chaos players lately. Ive played Chaos, specifically World Eaters since 3rd edition and this year Gdub came out with the Deamonkin codex and a few really fun pdfs: Kharne's butcher hoard, cypher, and even one focusing on chaos dreadnought formations. I havnt been this excited and having this much fun playing Chaos (specifically Khorne) since maybe 3rd edition. The blood tithe system is really fun and you can use a lot of models from Dark Vengance to run them.

Im honestly hoping they continue to do with the other chaos gods what they did with khorne.

Even Age of Sigmar has a load of sweet Khorne models you could adapt to 40k.

GL with your army.

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed.
