Subject: Adding to the starter set

Bounding Black Templar Assault Marine

Hey all,
I'm considering picking up the AOS starter set and perhaps an additional box and character for each force. I'm looking to get an "all rounder" style of play so any recommendations on which single box unit and character to add to each would be appreciated.

Stormcast are easy - judicators and a knight heraldor. For bloodbound I'd go with skullcrushers and a slaughterpriest. Alternatively you can pick up some seraphon ( a monster like carnosaur for example) and daemons (bloodletters, bloodcrushers etc.). Look for units with effects different that those in the starter (aside from visuals) and you can't go wrong

For the Stormcasts, Judicators would be my recommendation too. For the character, keep away from the Celestant-Prime (for now, if you want balanced forces) and you cannot really go wrong. The Knight-Azyros would be something else to look at, supporting your Prosecutors nicely. Knight-Castellant always worth a look too, as his hound is nicely frustrating for your opponent!
For Bloodbound, the Skullcrushers are a good recommendation as well. That said, a box of Bloodreavers or Blood Warriors will bulk up your force nicely, and you will get new weapon options over those in the starter set (I went for these two first, have only just added Skullcrushers). You might consider Khorne daemons too, as they fit in very nicely - Bloodletters or Bloodcrushers, I would recommend. If you fancy something a bit bigger but not overpowering, the Warshrine is always good, especially for your existing Bloodreavers.
For characters, the world is your oyster for Khorne. The Slaughterpriest is indeed a good choice, but also consider the Skullgrinder (a lot of fun!), and either the Exalted or Aspiring Deathbringer (both very solid). If you went for the Skullcrushers above, perhaps the Khorne Lord on Juggernaut, though he is quite expensive (£30, I think). Looks nice though!
Oh, and welcome aboard!

How balanced are you looking to keep things? What kinda price range are you looking at spending?
In the case of Stormcast, I personally feel like adding a whole unit can really skew the game in their favor without you intentionally trying to do so. I would suggest you make them be a "boxed character" and go for the Knight-Venator, building him as that model rather than the Knight-Heraldor. He's a beast of a monster hunter.
With the fact that you're going for just one character for the Stormcast, I would then suggest you go either for a box of Bloodreavers and two Heroes for the Bloodbound or a box of Blood Warriors and a Hero. Hero-wise, I would suggest the Slaughterpriest before anyone else.

Look at the keywords and weapon options missing for both sides and you'll find the long ranged units, warmachines, wizards and monsters are missing from both armies. Most comps calculate the Stormcast to be the stronger side in the starter set so add more to the Bloodbound than the SE.
For the SE I recommend a small contingent of Duardin, (Lantic) Empire, Aelves or Seraphon. Most have lots of cool units with the keywords missing from the SE.
For the Bloodbound, Chaos really is your oyster, but maybe something like Skaven would make a really fun addition. Stormfiends and Warp Lightning Cannons make a sharp contrast in playing styles to the units you get in the starter set :-)

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

Thanks for the suggestions all. I think I'll stick with a basic fluff expansion as you have posted. I do like the idea of picking up a start collecting set for each as an allies expansion. Cheers!
