Hey Dakka, just want to ask your opinion on something.

I'm thinking of starting a Wood Elf army (for fantasy and aos) but with the recent cutting of tomb kings, am wondering if it is worth it as the might get cut, especially as I'm thinking they still have metal models so what chance do they have surviving GWs cutting block.

So do you think they will survive or should I just let the Asrai go....

Any answer would be much appreciated,
Thanks.

Wood elves will definitely survive in some form as the "wanderers". Whether this means they will be merely a repackage of old miniatures or get a complete overhaul or something in between is not known at this point.

My gut feeling though, and I just base this on colloquial evidence, is that all Elves (all three types) were always among the more popular and better selling fantasy armies and it would be highly unlikely they would be discontinued.

I'd say the opposite, wood elves always struck me as the lest popular elves and on the whole elves seem to be being turned into a single race rather than three distinct races of elves. I'd also say that the prevalence of metal and finecast makes them a top priority to cut from the line. GW have been working towards full plastic for a while now, metal and finecast wont survive this WHFB purge.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

It would just seem strange to me that GW would try to make a distinction between the three factions of elves (or "Aelves") in the Age of Sigmar fluff only to homogenise them or kill one faction off entirely. I know this is GW I'm talking about here, who aren't exactly known for acting logically...

And there is a fair bit of finecast/metal in the wood elf range, but that didn't stop lizardmen getting the AoS repackage treatment. And they didn't go full plastic entirely, there still are finecast Slann and a few finecast Saurus for sale on the Seraphon segment of the website for example.

I'm of a mind to say the combining of elves in the End Times was either an elaborate way to get Dark Elves accepted as 'Order' or a way to make a quick buck by cross selling the lines to Elf players.

I think the Elves are up there with Chaos and Vampire Counts as the most popular armies, or at least the ones I used to see multiple of during 8th. Hopefully there will be even more than 3 Aelf factions moving forward, with various sub factions getting fleshed out.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)
