A campaign is coming up at my LGS and will be using the Daemon alter of war missions. For this campaign we are limited to 3 books and a dataslate which puts me in a difficult position of having to decide what to take. I play Cult Mech, Skitarii, Imperial Knights (FW included in the one book) and Astra Militarum, while I also have some fortifications and all of the assassins along with a ton of space marines that could be anything though I do have a lot of Space Wolves specific stuff. Now I would prefer to not use the marines if i can help it as I'd like to focus on the others, preferably AdMech.

My challenge though, is what do I take. For instance, I could go:

Book1: Cult Mech Codex
Book2: Skitarii Codex
Book3: Imperial Knights Codex
Dataslate: War Convocation

While I would like to have access to all of this, Im not sure I actually want to play the war convocation. I really don't like how limiting it is in terms of what you have to take, but the benefits are hard to argue. The downside to this is that it means no Astra Militarum, but in order to field them I would have ot take the AM codex plus anything additional like Montk'a or Steel Host. Plus, if I want to fun any fortifications I would have to take stronghold assault as one of my books which I think is slowed, but to each their own. Also, I have a lot of knights including most of the FW variants.So my question is what combo should I choose?

Uh, you should ask your game master if he would be ok making an exception for you since you are playing ad mech and ad mech is split into 3 books for no reason.

Just to bring a war convo, you are using all your options, while other players could be bringing dark elder, space marines, and tyranids which would be stupid and by far more diversity.

In short, ask if they can consider all ad mech books to count as 1 book.

It used to be limited to only 2 books. The only reason it was changed was pretty much because a couple people want to run war convo. I'm not a fan. I don't mind some limitations on choices or allying. Maybe a faction limit. But I really dislike they way its done. I was lobbying really hard for stronghold assault to be universal for everyone since fortifications are a part of so many kinds of detachments but they said no.

Also, if I do go with the books for the war convo, then I can't use the formation from the new starter set as it is a separate dataslate.
