I was wondering about the roles of the imperial guard in 30k, were they fighting the heretics or not even in the front lines... you know... doing stuff. Correct me if i'm wrong but maybe they never even existed... If they did exist, why didn't fw release any models. I would love to see some. (probably never even changed there uniform)

The one rule I have in my threads: DONT TALK ABOUT THE ABRAMS.

They are the Imperial Army and Solar Auxilia and for the later there are models, for the former you can use your 40k models and the Imperial Militias and Cults rules.

Imperial army: typical guard things: liberating planets with or without marine support (imperial militia also fills into here)
Solar auxilia: storm trooper equivalents (20-25% of the Imperial army) specialists in void warfare and other such things

It takes more then a few million marines to take over the galaxy

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

If you want "period accurate" imperial army, you can do a lot worse than Vostroyans, as that's essentially what they are...

The Imperial Army can look like anything, and only the Solar Auxilia come standard with Carapace Armor army wide.

The Imperial Army is probably too widely varied for it's own model line. The Imperialis Auxilia was even less standardized than the Imperial Guard that came later. You had everything from regiments consisting of troops given nothing more than a helmet, rifle, and BDUs/Webbing, to regiments made up of gene-enhanced troops in full "war armor" or troops in light weight powered armor. It ran the whole gauntlet when it came to training and equipment.

Some of the old Army units have their counterparts in the Imperial Guard. You can proxy the Calth Irregulars with Catachan pieces, for example. Or paint up Cadians with some bling and you have Malcador's Chosen for gaming purposes.
