Subject: [Space Wolves!] Transport for a 16-man Assault Unit

Heya, Dakka. After a break from buying new stuff for the hobby I recently dug up some old space wolves models, got the 7th edition codex, and snagged a Start Collecting box for $60. Now, work has given me a few extra hours each week and consequently my 'silly nerdy stuff' budget has increased a bit. Naturally, this means it's time to buy a huge transport vehicle kit for my blob of 15 Blood Claws and their attendant Wolf Priest.
However, the Space Wolf codex presents two options for this role! I could get either...
1) A Land Raider Crusader,
or
2) A Stormwolf Flyer
l
Now, first of all, this is a project that is more for fun/modelling/painting than it is for winning games--and my main opponent plays Tyranids and Chaos Space Marines, with the local meta short on Craftworlders or Tau. I'm not terribly worried about getting stomped and I'm not really look for alternatives to the 16-man angry squad (I realise it's a lot of eggs in one basket), only for the forum's opinion on which transport they should ride in.
If it helps, this is what the frothing horde of marines looks like:
-1 Wolf Priest w/ Runic Armour
-15 Blood Claws; 2 men carry Flamers, 1 man (non-character) has a Powerfist. At higher points levels a power armoured Wolf Guard* may end up here to eat challenges for the priest.
*If the presence of a Terminator Wolf Guard over a Power Armoured one would effect which vehicle you would choose for the unit and/or how you would use the assault group then by all means mention the hows and why's of this suggested change!
Thanks!

I think both has its own merit, the flyer has way better firepower, and can be brought as dedicated transport so you get a AV12 jinking objective secure fast skimmer at the end game. But if what you want is get your young fierce wolves into combat ASAP, Land raider is way better, and you can expect reliable T2 charge with T1 12 inch movement, and a 6 inch flat out

Personally I prefer the Land Raider over the flyer for an expensive assault unit. With the flyer your getting that melee unit into close combat on turn 3 at the earliest which at that point (for a 500+ point unit) means the battle might already be lost by the time they can make a charge. Against an aggressive close combat unit your land raider squad could charge on turn 1 and against most armies you can probably make a charge turn 2 (move 12 and flat out the land raider turn 1). The flyer itself is a great unit but your better off putting a small unit inside like a 3 man terminator unit or 5 blood claws.
I don't see any reason to take terminator armor in a blood claw unit as losing the ability to sweep is a big negative when units like Blood Claws want to win combat and sweep with their rage charge.

I play Blood Angels, a fellow assault-focussed Chapter. I recently purchased a Land Raider Crusader for use by my Death Company or a larger squad of terminators. I tried it out for the first time last night at the local club, and it worked a treat. 14 Death Company, a Chaplain, and Mephiston (Chief Librarian of the Blood Angels) charged a Knight and killed it. Granted, Mephiston was the one who felled it. For me it provides plenty of mobility, firepower and, more importantly, capacity. 16 standard miniatures or 8 Terminators. For me it's a no-brainer. My standard use of it would be 15 Death Company and 1 Chaplain, but I added Mephiston in for added CC lethality. I also added a multi-melta to the Crusader to provide some anti-armour capability, all be it limited.

for a turn 1 assault, you'll need the 'Deathpack' formation that comes from the new Starter Box, which allows a TWC unit and a Wolf Lord (on mount is the idea) to run and charge (rerolled) turn 1; and also my list involves going a Skyshield Landing Pad with Stormwolf on it for a turn 1 assault with Wulfen coming out ( a Land Raider works too). I prefer the Wolf, like the guns - like the range - like the speed - like the jink - like the model - like the options. it's unique. however it's a flyer or av14 you'll need really choose from...

There is also the Spartan assault tank that could be taken from IA 2. That can do everything a Land Raider can do except better. 5 Hull points, double the firepower of a typical Land Raider, transport capacity of 25, and can buy the Armored Ceramite option which makes it immune to the melta rule.
All for about 65 points more than a LR.

The downside to the Spartan Assault tank is that it's a Forge World model, so you may have limited use if rules are in place that don't allow FW miniatures and vehicles in certain games. And, damn, it's ugly. But there's no denying it's effectiveness.

Have you considered a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT?
I'd say go with a land raider if you're definitely set on getting them into melee, and fast. Reliable, sturdy... what isn't there to like about a land raider?

The only Forgeworld stuff I've seen has been a few things brought to Apocalypse games back in 5e and then one player who fields a codex IG army using Death Corps models. I'm not sure how often I'll put someone off by using a Spartan or CRASSUSS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT.
And after considering the views presented here--and contemplated how much I dislike trying to get cockpits to look right--I've decided to go with the Crusader!

I'd say the better choice for what you want. The stormwolf is legit guns wise and has done well, but its really not likely to get something expensive on the board when you need it. For the cockpits I accidently (like I had perfectly painted the interior of and I was mad) dusted over the glass of one of my nephilims with black spray and I'm sure theres a better way to do it but everyone says it looks cool and like the windows are tinted because its not totally black its still kind of opaque. Might be a way to cover up a quick interior job.
