Hey guys fairly new here, I have a 750 imperial fist army, my first main army that I've assembled and had a game or two with. I see you guys post alot here and wondered if I could ask yyour opinion on my list. What would you change?
HQ is a Librarian, Power armor, Mastery level 1.
Troops:
Tact squad ×5 with one Las cannon + Rhino
Tact squad x5 with one Las cannon + Rhino
Heavy
x3 Centurions with Las cannons.
Elites
x5 Terminators all standard power fist/Storm bolsters.
Fast attack
x1 Land speeder with auto cannon and multi melts.
This is 750 bang on, when I played it was very flexible but again any opinions? My only thoughts was the Centurion.
The general opinion on Dev Cents is they should be packing grav cannons. I don’t personally own any to test, but in theory agree. If you just want to shoot some LCs downrange, a normal dev squad can do the job almost as well for like half the points.
Librarians are decent low cost HQs. He probably wants that second mastery level if you can scare up the points. Giving him TDA to hang with the termis might not be a bad idea either.
My general rule of thumb is that if you are going with a 5 man squad you should probably put them in a razor. Or go for the full 10 man squad in a rhino. As these guys are going to be out and about, you might be better off with special weapons, rather then heavies.
I like terminators. But from a point efficiency standpoint, they are a little lackluster. When I field them, I add a assault cannon and a chainfist to the squad. Stombolters are just not the firepower they used to be, and need some help. And the chainfist is there for when tanks need to die. While S8 sounds good, when bonking against AV13-14 targets, you need to roll well to crack open things. While a lot of tanks have soft rear armor to hit, walkers need to be punched in the face. Assault terminators are another option if you want to go that way, but have a different list of problems.
I like my speeders with TML/HB. That said, your list needs a splash of melta, and this isn’t a terrible place for it. I might go 2xMM, rather then the AsC/MM. It’s a fragile platform, and needs to get close to use those guns, so be careful with it.
One thing to keep in mind is formations. There is free power to be had there if you are willing to restrict your list to take advantage of it. Swapping out your HQ and dropping the terminators for a tac squad would let you field a battle demi co. It’s worth thinking about. A full tac squad in a drop pod is going to do similar things to a bunch of stormbolters, at about the same cost. Chaplains make decent low cost HQs.
Thank you for the in depth reply, all of what you said makes a lot of sense especially using a Dev squad instead of the Cents is a good shout.I absolutely love the land speeders and termies so I'm glad you agree on that
If you were to build a 750 how would you do it?
Again thanks again for the in depth response, helped a ton
Asking what I would field is a tricky question. There are a lot of different things that pull at me when putting a list together. What have I painted recently that needs it’s baptism in fire on the table? Is there something dusty on the back of the shelf that needs to see some daylight? Some theme, either fluff or mechanics that I want to explore?
At the end of the day there are a number of things I try to be able to do with a Take All Comers list.
Have a way to get scoring units to objectives and keep them alive there for as long as needed.
A way to kill: Heavy armor, light armor, hordes, MCs and flyers.
As an Ultramarine, I like to have something from every FOC slot. Just feels more balanced. With formations this is not as simple/relevant. But I try to keep the spirit of it. As an Imp. Fist I’d expect more heavy support from you.
Semi stream of consensus about my list building. Spoiled, as it doesn’t really have anything to do with your list.
Spoiler:
Most of my list form around the core of two full tac squads, with either rhinos or pods.
MM/M, c-melta sarge
ML/F, basic sarge
The melta squad provides some heavy AV fire that is going to be up table where it is needed. Also, scoring unit able to get to objectives. The ML/F squad I field mostly for tradition, they are RTB01 marines who have been loyally serving for over 25+ years.
Those two squads should be about 400 points total. So about 350 to go.
I just need to finish the driver on my Vindicator to finish him up. I really want to get him on the table. So that’s my HS slot and 120 points.
When picking a HQ, you need to ask yourself what’s he doing and where is he going? The often want to be in the thick of it chopping things apart, so go well with FA or elite picks. I’d like to include the TDA captain I recently painted, but getting him and a squad of terminators in at this point value (as well as the vindi) is not going to be easy, so he can wait. I paint faster then I get games in, so this is not a new phenomenon. I do have a bike librarian who has only seen the table once, so I’ll grab him off the shelf. Then a bike squad to ride with him. Probably loaded up with grav guns.
So I end up with a list that looks like this:
Lib, ML2 bike
10 man tac, MM/M, c-melta, rhino
10 man tac, ML/F, rhino
3 man bike, 2xgrav
Vindi
Now I review the list and check to see if I have my bases covered. AV? I’ve got melta, and the grav guns to deal with the big stuff, ML can help with smaller things. Vindi also works. Hordes I plan on boltering down, or putting the pie plate from the vindi to work. MCs get graved. Tons of troops for a list of this level. I could probably drop a tac squad if I wanted. No AA. I’m planning on just trying to keep out of their line of fire and focus on the ground game. You don’t normally see them at this point level anyway.
Thematically we have a nice little mech list here. A tank and a pair of rhinos, screened by some bikes. Feels like something a marine commander would put together for a rapid hammer smash into a target. Good and fluffy.
Now there are still things I could do, little tweaks. As it looks to be troop heavy, I could do something like swap out a tac squad for some scouts in a LSS, maybe pick up a normal speeder with the points saved. Still keeps the theme, adds a little more firepower, and more speed, at the cost of a little durability.
