Seems random I know, but particularly on models like Sternguard and Vanguard vets, does anyone think that the models are over-decorated? All the adornments, trophies and what-not always seem over the top to me. I can't really think of another army that does the same thing.

I know as Veterans, they're meant to stand out, but at times it seems silly. Does anyone use simpler/sleeker models for their veterans?

Way overdecorated. I prefer sleeker, more militaristic looks for Space Marines. And if they are decorated, it's in the old Rogue Trader fashion, with severed heads and such.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

I do think the Veterans should stand out from the rest but I agree, they are just a bit overdone.

I cut my vet boxes with some spare parts to tone them down a bit. Most of the tabarded legs went into honor guard. I like the extra detail, but it is a little much. It’s worse if trying to integrate now models into existing collections. They are so much more blinged then their predecessors it isn’t funny. Heck, they make my old Captains look plain.

I really like this look. But I understand it you don't. Chapters like Raptors tend to be more "pragmatic" with less decorations, and, even, camo, IIRC

10,000 year old armor + Marines that venerate their gear as holy relics who also have a lot of downtime during space travel = heavily ornamented war gear. I too prefer the simpler appearance, but it doesn't really make sense if the fluff is taken into account. During the Heresy war gear was just that, and ornamentation worn by most regular legion astartes would have been extremely rare.
