Not sure. Lost track a while ago.

I'm looking to start up a 30k army soon for an upcoming campaign at my FLGS. Gonna be selling off my IG stuff, buy some BaC box(es) and tanks, all that fun stuff. Originally, I was planning to do just a Sons of Horus army, since I have their Primarch and all.

But, ever since I saw the Nathanial Garro model, I really wanted to try out a Knights Errant-style army. More as a fluffy army than anything, since that's what the campaign is going to be more geared towards. I was thinking using the Shattered Legions rules, using Sons of Horus and either Alpha Legion or Iron Warriors. Have Garviel Loken as Warlord, and add in Garro as well.

Couple questions about this though:

First, does the Shattered Legions rules in Book 6 allow you to use ANY legions, or just the three Loyalist legions in the Drop Site Massacre? Because if that's the case, I'd probably switch out to Raven Guard and Salamanders instead, and just have a standard Praetor as Warlord.

Second, since the Knights Errant work directly for Malcador the Sigillite, can we assume that they'd probably have access to more high-end wargear? Or would they be more along the lines of "You get what you can find" kind of thing?

Last, for painting scheme. Do the Knights Errant have ANYTHING on their armour to denote their old heraldry, or are they simply gunmetal armour with nothing on it? I'd LIKE to be able to denote what marine comes from what legion rather than just "everything is silver, nothing special." But I don't want to break the fluff.

Your guys' thoughts on building a Knights Errant-themed army? Any advice/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

First, at this time, Knights Errant are HQ independent characters only. There are no multi-model knight-errant units of any kind. Just wanted to get that out of the way in case there was any confusion.

Anyway, on to the rest:
Shattered Legions can be any combination of two or three legions. Some legion special rules are modified or eliminated when used as part of a SL list though, so be sure to take that into account.

The Knights themselves have access to some pretty amazing gear, yes. They are only individuals though, so they don't exactly hump around entire platoon's worth of digilaser rings and displacer field belts to gear up their allies.

The Knights have explicitly foresworn all previous allegiances and bear no markings save those of the House of the Sigilite which is basically grey on gunmetal.

As for building a themed army, the thing with the Knights is they could pop up anywhere and join most any loyalist force before leaving again on their mysterious mission, so there's not really any chance for them to form a retinue. Basically the themes the Knights have don't really work at army scale.

well, to answer your questions:

1) Any legions, though if you really wanted something like a knight errant army (which wasn't really a thing by the fluff) your best bet would probably be to look at what you could do with blackshields, and just fluff their stuff differently)
2) ONLY actual knight errants would have this high-end wargear, so only the HQs in game I suppose
3) They are grey with no markings other then Malcador's own.

the way I would do it is this:

a few knights errant HQs, with black shield or shattered legions representing marines who they have grouped themselves with for this mission. Remember knights errant are precursor inquisitors, usually working alone or in a small group, and often attaching to allied forces.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.
