Hi, me and my friend have tried to make the leap to PC gaming to access mods etc.

We are trying to play Terraria through Steam and he has been able to join my world. However, although we can both hear all the in-game sounds through our headphones, we cannot hear each others' voices at all. We are both using different brands of headsets with built-in mikes. He is on Windows 7, I am on Windows 10. Our headsets did not come with driver CDs. However, my computer is telling me my "USB PLUG AND PLAY DEVICE" (the headset) has got the latest drivers.

Cortana can't seem to hear me properly (it says my device is unsupported so Cortana may not hear me) and when I tried to test it through Cortana, the volume was showing as too low. Via control panel, I can listen to my own voice with perfect clarity through my headphones and I can use the in-built speech recognition software and it reports my volume is normal and there are no problems, therefore my microphone is definitely working.

Can anyone give any advice? I am 100% sure our headsets are working correctly.

Why is PC gaming so insanely, mind-bendingly complicated and frustrating? It's 2016, why don't things just work??

Is push to talk on? Chck the pdf see if it is push to talk button. Also on the wire is it set to let you talk set to on?

Also try getting the drivers needed is it everywhere it doesnt work or just in a game?
If it is just in a ga,e you may need to go to the options amd find the mid on off.

Does it come with in-built voice chat nowadays? If not, you might want to try teamspeak, skype or some other program for voice communication.

Edit: I believe the regular steam chat can be switched to voice chat as well.

It's probably the program you're using. Try Teamspeak or Skype and see if the problem persists

Hi gents, thank you. My friend and I are used to XBox Live, so we're used to being able to simply start a game, invite our mate and start chatting with zero fuss. By comparison, PC gaming online is... more frustrating and confusing than it should be in this era.

It's been a while though, and I forgot you need to open a chat program of some sort... XD

Steam's voice quality was appalling with tons of lag, and the process to actually get a voice chat started was ludicrous. We're going to use Skype next time. (The in-game sounds and music were perfect and the game didn't lag until towards the end, I just couldn't understand a word he was saying, even though all the checks I did confirmed my microphone and speakers were working perfectly.)

I also managed to uninstall my computer speakers and now they won't work or be detected at all... (I selected "disable" and it completely disappeared from device manager)

As a workaround, the following steps can be performed by any user to re-enable the playback device:

On the task bar, right click the speaker icon and click Playback devices.
On the Playback tab, right click and select Show Disabled Devices:
The “Speakers” device should appear. Right click the device and select Enable.
