Hey all, this is my first post so please let me know if I'm posting in the wrong place or am breaking any forum rules. Anyways, my roommate is almost done with his 1850 point dreadnought drop pod list and while I don't believe in writing a list just to counter another army, I'm honestly quite stumped on how to fight it with my guardsmen and not get absolutely blown out.

His 1850 point list is going to look something like this:

- Bjorn w/ pod and helfrost cannon
- Murderfang w/ pod
- 2x Venerable Dreadnoughts w/ pods and shields and axes
- 2x Venerable Dreadnoughts w/ pods, power fists, heavy flamers, & multimeltas
- 3x Venerable Dreadnoughts w/ pods and assorted other weapons
- Stormfang gunship

I was planning on running the Emperor's Blade Assault Company and Vendettas and pray that I can get objectives better with ObSec, but any advice would be helpful.

The units available to me are:
3x CCS/PCS
3x Commissar/Lord Commissar
60x Guardsmen/Veterans
3x Lascannon Teams
3x Autocannon Teams
3x Missile Teams
10x Kasrkin/Veterans
4x Chimeras
1x Hellhound
3x Armored Sentinels
3x Valkyries/Vendettas
2x Leman Russ
2x Leman Russ Executioners
1x Leman Russ Vanquisher
1x Engineseer
1x ADL w/ Quad Gun
20x Tempestus Scions

Also we're pretty lax about proxies when we play. Thanks again

The easiest way I've found to kill off stuff like that is to give your vets demolitions doctorine. Sure you'll lose some, but all those melta bombs will decimate him

Unfortunately the only really good solution for drop podding is getting Coteaz and putting him in a blob with lascannons and plasma guns, but that gets a bit boring.

Otherwise your only real option is taking a big blob to bubblewrap. You'll lose it all to heavy flamers but if you can keep tanks/transports out of melta range, you can hit back on your turn with melta vets + demolitions or Pask and friends.

Murderfang aside, space wolf dreadnoughts are still relatively easy to tarpit, since they still have fewer attacks. Give all your sergeants and vets melta bombs and you should be ok.

First of all tell him he sucks for fielding a list like that. Second of all, if he's bringing that then there is no need for you to attempt to play nice either. You should just take 1850 points of Hellhounds armed with melta cannons and the meltagun upgrade... Or 40 sentinels all armed with lascannons...

If you're using the models you have below then I would take the 4 chimeras, take the hunter killer upgrade, put vets inside and give them x2 meltaguns. Don't forget to "ram" him (S7 attack). Take the x3 sentinels and arm them with lascannons. Take the hellhound and arm it with the melta cannon and the meltagun upgrade. Take 2 of the Vendetta's. Fill in the rest of points with Pask flanked by LR's. I might also think about taking camo netting on some of the tanks to assist with saves. Don't take any troops on foot, he'll just flame them turn 1.

I don't really see a problem here. You have all the tools to take his list apart. His biggest drawback is your biggest advantage, his list has very few models while yours has many. Maximize your MSU which you can do very well as guard and overwhelm you opponent with threats. charge his dreads and tie them up in close combat while you get your meltas behind him. each drednought can only kill a single squad a turn so make sure that you force him to expose himself when he does. counter deepstrike your scions behind his lines. whatever direction he turns, you will have clear shots on his rear armor.

You also have the advantage against this list in that you only have to bring anti AV weapons. don't waste points on mortars and autocannons. but he has to prepare for both armor and blobs in your list.

drednoughts are very good at killing elite infantry. get a priest, add him to a 50 man squad, charge your opponent and then tie him up for the rest of the game. even if he gets more drednoughts to help he'll only be killing guardsmen and only a few of them at a time. it will stall his army and let you have almost total board control

Take a a 50 man platoon with 5 meltabombs and 3 priest, split them into 3 units with a priest in each then assault the dreadnoughts. The dreads should lose that fight. Remember if you get a stunned they loose one attack in close combat.

Take a proxy void shield since your group is liberal with proxies. Mace sure he can't get into the voidshield when dropping and his alpha strike should be very reduced.

You could go for some obvious counters, but a blob is useful against most matchups.

SW player, I run Bjorn and have tried multiple dreads, etc...

He has only 11 potential targets on his best day, half that typically. When podding in, he's gotta pick and stick to his choices.

Get him to expose rear armour.
Have him assault tanks at awkward angles, which deny him any consolidation move after he wrecks the vehicle, leaving his backside exposed for all to see.

Glance him to pieces.

I do not imp, so do not know more than a basic understanding of your codex and options, not of how it feels to play it, but IMO you should have him wrapped and overwhelmed and his pods should be dropping outside your lines. Feed him a unit or two of some 30pts nothingness to a dread, and you'll find by the time he's chewed through that his dread is already at 1HP left if not wrecked... persistence works well at takingthem down.

He really is playing a terrible list by doing that, but man must it be fun! Hahaha

Thanks all for the responses! I ended up fielding mechanized veterans with meltas, two platoon command squads with officers of the fleet in chimeras, a blob with Coteaz and lascannons, two vanquishers, and a vendetta. Half of his army didn't arrive until turn four and I easily dismantled what did arrive with driveby meltaguns and forcing him to deploy into awkward positions. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be

Awkward is soooo the word for Fielding multiple dreads. One is amazing, two is clunky, more is ... difficult to employ

Glad it worked out for ya
