Hi Dakkanauts,
I'm in the process of getting the minis together to form a chaos SM warband. So far I've bought a set of the DV chaos minis including the chosen, the lord and the aspriring champion, the hellbrute and the cultists. I've also got a ten man CSM squad and a box of raptors, as well as 6 chaos terminators. I will get a box of Khorne Berserkers and maybe another box of CSM. I also quite like the idea of having some possessed marines in my warband.
Does anyone have any suggestions for adding to this? Any and all advice will be appreciad,
Cheers all,
Viv

Well, it depends what direction you want to take. By this I mean what style of games you want to play. Competitive games against the strongest factions will punish you if you take a variety of units without a solid, experience backed plan, but if you are playing games against mates and hobbyists who you know do not play only to win, then you can take what you want. A lot of people who play chaos marines are talking about the new "formations" available (an addition to the reg force org chart) from the "Black Legion" supplement, namely the Cyclopia Cabal which allows you to control an enemy unit for 1 round of shooting via a psychic power.
If you want to have a decent chance of winning but also want to take models you like, I would do something like buying 2 or 3 "competitive" choices and then getting whatever other squads you want. Starting with 3 obliterators, a heldrake and the best way to run the cyclopia cabal formation (three Sorcerors on bikes) would give your army a big boost in terms of winning.

Havocs with autocannons would be fine. How about some rhinos for your CSM and berserkers?

Our best units are Plague Marines, Obliterators, Nurgle marked bikes and cultists (cheap). The Helldrake is good too.
Avoid Warp Talons, Mutilators, posessed and oddly enough basic chaos space marines.
For Chaos space marines things are a bit bleak competitive wise, friendly games however they're fine and all the above advice can be ignored and just go for what you like the look of

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples |

Thanks guys, its more about fluff and aeasthetics for me as opposed to being a power player because painting is my thang, so I always go for things that look fun to paint! I'm definatrly getting a Helldrake, they look ace!
Cheers all,
Viv

Not only do they look ace but they're more than useful on the table top.

Maulerfiends are surprisingly good too due to a 12" move, being immune to dangerous terrain, and being overall cheap.
Chaos Lords and Sorcerers aren't terrible either.
