Can I pick anything from space marines to use in my dark angels army?

I have seen things like tanks be used as dark angels in dark angels colours?

You may not take anything in the SM codex as a Dark Angel model, just the ones listed in Codex: Dark Angels.

However, SMs are "Battle Brother" allies with DA. There's no reason you can't take "Space Marine" allies and bring them with your DA to field whatever units you want. Then, just paint them however you like, they're your bits of plastic.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

There are a lot of units that are shared between marine armies, regardless of color. But not everything.

research deathwatch, good easy to paint color sceme that looks great and then you have the excuse to have space marines allies of anything. you still need to choose a main army book but the allies are more fluffy

That's cool then, I basically have ordered Storm Talon gunship, Storm Hawk Interceptor, Space marine Hunter tank, Space marine IronClad Dreadnought and 2 x Centurion Assault Squads but plan on painting them in Deathwing and Dark Angels green :-)

I want a Valkyrie but doubt that has any links to DA?

That sounds good. I believe some of those are not in the dark angels codex (don't have the book in front of me, sorry), but you can paint them as DA if you want and have a separate allied detachments that are from the space marine codex.
You could also run the whole army as if it is from the space marine codex, but then you wouldn't have access to units like deathwing and interregator-chaplains.

A Valkyrie is an Astra Militarum unit, so you would need to field a detachment of Astra Militarum to be able to field that.

EDIT: changed would to wouldn't

P.S. You can also play 'unbound', which basically means you can field any units you like, but that does mean you won't get the special benefits that you would get if you took a detachment.

If you do end up using two different codexes for the same army, be sure you have a way of telling who’s who.

Even if they are all painted as Dark Angels, you should be able to tell who is using the rules from Codex: Dark Angels and who’s using the rules from Codex: Space Marines.

One way to do this without changing the overall paint scheme is different colored base rims, of paint some of their shoulder trim as from a different company.

But if you end up in a situation where one tactical squad is DA, and the other is using the rules of Ultramarines (so you can fill the troop tax of an allied CAD) you need to separate them.

Awesome, cheers for the help guys!!

I all ready have a fairly big army of DA's, my army list so far is:

44 Deathwing terminators,
90 tactical squad DA marines (various upgraded weapons),
1 x Nephilim Jetfighter,
1 x DarkTalon ravenwing,
1 x StormTalon Gunship,
5 x ravenwing bike squad,
1 x Veterens squad,
3 x Belial,
2 x Cypher,
2 x Dreadnought,

So would I be able to use for example the tanks as transport for my DA squads? Or would I need space marines only to be transported in these, as I think in the codex you can use tanks as transport for the DA tactical and terminator squads?

Battle Brother allies can ride in each other’s vehicles, but due to the recent draft FAQ, can’t deploy in them. So you would need to start on the table and hop in turn 1.

Not that there are a lot of transports unique between DA/SM. So you could just take it as part of the faction that that unit belongs to.

If you do plan on taking allies, I’d go through that section of the rules with a fine toothed comb. There are some subtle corner cases that do pop up. Something you will need to be well versed in if you are going to use them.

Awesome, thanks for the help everyone, got some units to paint up which will take a fair bit of time as they're all big pieces but can't wait to use them :-)
