I wanted to get back into 40 since my buddy has been playing (Eldar). I just want to stick to 1000 pt, since I will mostly just be playing him. Since he is running elder (no wraith troops or flyers at least), I want to run a very competitive list at 1000. I am choosing between skiitari/ad mech and Necrons.

I see that they both have some great "Start Collecting" bundles. So I was hoping to buy 1 of those (or 2 if the combined forces work well together) and buy the remaining XX/1000 separately.

With that said, I know the formation you get in the necron bundle is amazing (Ret. phalanx). I am not sure how admech/skiitari really work, but they look very interesting.

- For Necrons I was going to run the retribution phalanx with the crypt. harvest formations (I think it fits within 1000pts) or even a reclamation legion with Zahndrekh.

-for the admech I was thinking just combining 2 of the start collecting boxes. But would GREATLY appreciate any insight on how to build this army at 1000.

The most obvious answer is run the army you like the look, fluff and feel of the most. On the table, Necrons are really an assault army and Ad Mech are very shooty, more shooty than Tau in some ways. At 1000 points, I think you'll have more success with Necrons. Ad Mech don't get good until higher point games.

The get starting Necron formation is good, but requires a Stalker, which is pretty underwhelming at 1000 points. If you want competitive, just run CAD Wraith spam. 3x Squads of 6x Wraiths and your mandatory Overlord + some 5x Immortal Squads.
