Subject: A question on Formations

Ok so im a wee bit confused as to Formations as I'm not used to them (I mainly play Sisters of Battle and we have none)
Can you use a Formation (Like say the 3 baneblade formation) with a Non-IG army? (IE Fielding them with my sisters for some serious shock) or do I need to take an allied IG detachment to run the formation?

Formations are detachments of their own. The following army consisting of 2 detachments is perfectly legal:
Combined Arms Detachment - Sisters of Battle
1 Celestine
2x5 Battle Sisters
Emperor's Fury Super-Heavy Company Formation - Imperial Guard
3x Baneblade
HOWEVER: Only Formations and Detachments can be used like that. "Choices" from e.g. the Cadia Detachment like the Superheavy Support Element cannot be used like that as they're not a Formation/Detachment.

First off, Welcome to the forums (I see this is your first post).
Second, yes you can. in 7th Edition your army is arranged into Detachments, and as long as none of the Detachment's requirements conflict with each other (such as both containing the same Unique Character or explicitly saying it can't be the same faction as another detachment) then you can field them in the same army.
In your case, the 3 Baneblade Formation is a Detachment on it's own with no further requirements, so you can field it alongside any other Detachment without problem.
An example of a even weirder set of "allies" is a Detachment of Grey Knights alongside a Daemon Formation. Yes this is actually legal, but the Daemons and GKs might end up not doing anything for a turn because they distrust each other so much. Refer to the Allies Chart in the core rulebook to know how two armies interact with each other in these situations.

Thank you both for the quick answer. It makes me rather happy as my Sisters lacked the punch that a baneblade formation should give.
Id ended up with 3 baneblades as part of a trade for rebuilding an engine and didnt know what to do with them until i started reading on other factions.

One more thing as there're Baneblade chassis with transport capacity: Thanks to the latest FAQ draft (not official yet though) you cannot place e.g. Battle Sisters inside of a Stormlord during deployment. You'll have to place them on the board separately, but you can then embark the Sisters on the Stormlord during your turn 1.

A minor and unwritten limitation on mixing formations as you're describing is dilution of special rules, e.g. an HQ confers an rule on all units from their faction in the army, but whoops, you just cut half your points out of that special rule by bringing another faction. But as a fellow Sisters player, that happily doesn't affect us, as we have no formations and no army-wide buffs. Hooray for armies that haven't seen an update in several editions! Also, allow me to express triple-Baneblade-envy and welcome you to the boards!

Well I'll have to try to get in a game before those go official cause I did want to see 40 sisters pop out of a stormlord to the shock of my opponent who thinks im bringing a guard army

It would be funnier if you brought an Inquisitor with several Jokaeros.
The last thing anyone would expect is 40 space monkeys popping out to give him the E.T Finger of Death.

I've only got 1 Jokaeros... But I could put 30 sisters, 1 inquisitor his Jokaeros and a strikesquad of inquisitorial henchment in it ... Sounds like fun.

Why not run 4x5 jokaero and have them stay inside? the stormlord allows for 20 models to shoot out of it., and you have the choice between Lascans, multimeltas and heavy flamers.

funny story. I play Tau (big surprise). I got the Renegade box more for my opponents to use against me (really\actually) than for me to use them for myself. Funny thing is, that using them either as Renegade (CSM) knights or Imperial (IOM) Knights, they are Desperate Allies, which have rules in the rulebook governing the model interactions. I just got an Acheron too, and it is legal in a IOM knight list but not in the CSM knight list. Funny, no?
