So I may be starting an Admech army in the very near future (A friend is looking to unload his stuff). As I go over the model line, I'm trying to figure out what stuff I might be interested in buying/painting up for a small to medium force.
The models that scream out to me the most are, incidentally, the robots. As a former Ork player, I loved me some walkers. Getting back into the game with walkers may be a bad idea but...eh...
So in general, what is the consensus when it comes to Admech...
1. What are the core units I should be looking to get as the back bone of the army?
2. Kastelan Robots - Are they worthwhile even from a casual standpoint? Can they carry their weight? What is their role?
3. Breacher and Destroyer Servitors, same questions as Kastelan Robots
4. Would the army be better off just being an allied force? Or are full Skitarri armies viable?
5. Other than the two codecies, are there other sources for Skitarii formations/profiles that I need to be aware of?

The Kastelan Robots are actually monstrous creatures, not walkers, so they're inherently more survivable. They're primarily platforms for putting out large amounts of str 6 fire. They can be kitted out for melee, but being slow infantry they aren't getting into a fight anytime soon. Think of them more as unkillable gun platforms, especially if you take their formation which lets you mash 2 squads of them together with a Dominus, in which case if you rotate them around correctly it will be almost impossible to kill with anything but D.
The servitor platforms are super shooty, but not very survivable, and aren't fearless. They're troops though so if you want to run Cult as a CAD you'll need 2 squads of them.
Skitarii are a more balanced and cohesive army than Cult, but both can be run as their own armies. They do better allied together though, as Cult can't really put a bunch of boots on the ground and Skitarii have little in the way of survivability.

You've no idea how much I enjoy hearing the Kastelan's are MC's. Are the Servitor's also MCs? Or are they vehicles or oddly classified as infantry?
I think I'd likely blend and make an allied force, like you say. I just watched a few Batreps and noticed the Cultmech have cool stompy robit stuff but, like stated, not many boots which Skitarii fill.

Except for Cult Kastellan Robots (MCs); Skitarii Dragoons, Ironstriders, and Dunecrawlers (all Walkers); and (for completeness) Knights (SH Walkers), all AdMech units so far are Infantry.

1. What are the core units I should be looking to get as the back bone of the army?
The best individual units are probably the Kataphron Destroyers with grav cannons, and Skitarii Dragoons with tasers. The worst are, unfortunately, electro-priests.
Melevolence wrote: 2. Kastelan Robots - Are they worthwhile even from a casual standpoint? Can they carry their weight? What is their role?
Yes they're great and their Cohort Cybernetica formation is even better. Badablack addressed their role. Always go full phosphor unless your meta is really full of Imperial Knights.
Melevolence wrote: 3. Breacher and Destroyer Servitors, same questions as Kastelan Robots
Grav is popular for a reason, and each Destroyer gets six shots each. While tougher than most Troop choices, they're almost always targeted first. With a 30" range you could keep them in Reserves for some games. Plasma doesn't compare and Breachers are too niche.

Can't have an AdMech thread without mentioning the big War Convocation formation. It's by far the most competitive way to play AdMech. It does win some tournaments. AdMech as allies can fill weaknesses in some other Imperial lists, especially formations like Cohort Cybernetica, Dominus Maniple, and Elimination Maniple.
Melevolence wrote: 5. Other than the two codecies, are there other sources for Skitarii formations/profiles that I need to be aware of?
The Dominus Maniple formation in the Start Collecting box, and the War Convocation formation was in a White Dwarf.

Great information, thank you loads!
I was also curious as to the role the Striders play as well. I suppose if I can get my hands on the books, I'd not be quite so clueless XD
The language is both entertaining and easy to understand, so that's a plus.
Whenever I think about getting a new unit, I refer to this website and read about what they do and how they're used. Very very handy.
On the Striders specifically; if you want to sell your left kidney, you can field them in the "Ironstrider Cavaliers" formation, which has a whole bunch of them run on from the side of the board, in a sweet flanking maneuver.
But the big thing?
They can choose an enemy Character, at the start of the game, and re-roll all failed Wound rolls /for the rest of the game/ on that guy and his unit.
If the damn things weren't so expensive, I'd use this every time, I reckon.
The Dragoon is one of my favourite units, the Ballistari, not so much. It's good for, well, buzzing around like an irritating fly you can't catch.

Good stuff! I'll take a look at that link once I'm not at work. Work computers don't like that site it seems :p
I like the sound of that Strider formation to harass their Warlord, or at the very least be a very big distraction unit.
I think I'm liking the sound of this army. Watched a few more batreps on the youtubes and their formation benefits seem...quite strong. So the Admech have an 'orders' system akin to the IG, so to speak?
